November 9, 2010

As part of the Body of Christ
and this congregation,
we will faithfully participate
in the ministries of the church
by our prayers, our presence,
our giving, and our service,
so that through our witness,
we can lead others in becoming
disciples of Jesus Christ
and thereby change the world.

John's Epistle
Honoring Our Veterans

This week, our nation pauses to honor those who have served us in our military forces, both in times of war and times of peace. For almost 100 years, at 11:00 AM on November 11-the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month-citizens of the USA have taken a few moments to remember the sacrifices of our Veterans as they served in the cause of peace.

It's ironic that in order to have peace, we must sometimes have war, and that even in times of peace we must also have those who are ready at a moment's notice to defend and preserve that peace. As citizens of this nation, we have enjoyed an extremely long period of peacefulness inside our borders that could only happen by the constant vigilance of the hundreds of thousands of men and women who serve.

Veterans Day is supposed to help us remember so that we never take their service for granted. Just as there is irony in the balance between peace and war, it is ironic that Veterans Day can only mean something if we who are civilians take time to remember. It is the Veteran who is honored and the Civilian who gives thanks.

To be quite honest, I didn't even begin to understand the importance of Veterans Day until I served as Pastor in Henrietta, Texas, the small town in which November 11 was one of the most important days of the year. Each November, at 11:00 AM on the eleventh day of the month, a program was held in the High School auditorium to a standing-room-only crowd. If you wanted a seat, you really needed to be there early! But it was even better if you arrived early and gave your seat up so that a Vet or family member could have it. Businesses closed for the hour so their employees could attend, and the program was conducted in vignettes portrayed by the students. It was indeed a high-and holy-moment.

As a pastor, it is my job to lead our congregation in remembering that it was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that has led to our salvation. We remember his life, death, and resurrection each week at 11:00 AM.

This Thursday, however, at 11:00 AM, I will stand with all of you as just another citizen of this country that has given me countless opportunities, remembering those whom I have known, as well as the many I have never met, whose willingness to serve has granted me those opportunities.

Grace and peace,

Pastor John

Activities and Announcements

The Rock

"The Rock" is up and running! What a blast we are having! But, we'd love to have more kids join us! Please invite your friends, grandchildren, neighbors, etc!  Don't forget: Dinner will be served at 6:15pm every Wednesday, followed by various games and activities designed to help children learn more about what it means to live out their faith!  The children are working on a Christmas Pageant that will be performed in mid- December. The children will sing Christmas songs, tell the Christmas story, and even make their own costumes!  Any child ages K-5 is welcome at The Rock! We need volunteers, so sign-up to help or contact Karron Younkin.

Lunch/Decorating

Mark your calendar for November 21st.  After the 11:00 service we will have lunch and then began putting up new Advent banners and the Christmas trees.  We need everyone to be a part of this celebration, not only to make light of the work but also to have this time of fellowship.

Thanksgiving/Food Pantry

The Food Pantry needs your help!  The Food Pantry tries to help families in need all year, but at Thanksgiving and Christmas the Pantry likes to be able to give something special.  They are in need of any type of Thanksgiving fare.  Examples might be canned pumpkin, dressing mix, boxed mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, etc.  Please bring your item(s) up to the Church at your earliest convenience.  Many Thanks!!

Preschool

BUMP is beginning to get ready for our annual Thanksgiving Feast. All students and their families have lunch together as one big family. It takes a lot of work to pull this off, but it is sooo worth it to have all of our little friends and their families break bread together. As a part of that preparation, we will be cleaning out both of the refrigerators and the freezers. If you have anything in them that you would like to keep, please label it with your name and the date. Anything without such a label or that has expired, will be thrown out. The date for the clean out is Monday, November 15th.

Our preschool is very blessed to have a congregation that supports this very important outreach program.
