As part of the Body of Christ and this congregation, we will faithfully participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our giving, and our service, so that through our witness, we can lead others in becoming disciples of Jesus Christ and thereby change the world.

Welcome to Buckingham United Methodist Church
John's Epistle
For All the Saints
This Sunday, October 31, the people of Buckingham UMC will celebrate on the most holy of feasts of the Christian year: All Saints Sunday.
All Saints Day, celebrated on Nov. 1 in the Catholic tradition, is a remembrance of those faithful who have gone on to a greater glory, feasting at the heavenly banquet table. It is a powerful, bittersweet day for those who have lost, as we claim the promise of resurrection and eternal life in Christ.
This year, we will once again read the names of those saints who were part of our Church Family during their lives in this world, lighting a candle in their memory to signify that they still live. As an added moment of celebration, Chris Mougia will play two songs on the Bagpipes. I'm looking forward to the day, as much as one can when we know it will bring sorrow for many.
I realized several years ago, as I tried to comfort family after family in their grief, that one of the best ways we can honor their memories is to lives our own lives by the best standards we saw in those we have loved. Yet, for us who claim Christ, it is more than that: We believe that what made those "best" things stand out in them was the Spirit of God. As we strive to live our lives to honor our loved ones, we are living more closely in relationship to God.
All Saints Day, however, has never been simply about remembering individuals. What makes them "saints" is that their lives belonged to Christ, rather
than to themselves. One of the marks of a saint is that she or he has a concern for the whole body of Christ that is greater than for self. A saint, therefore, trusts that God is working in the present to bring about the Kingdom in the future, is one who is willing to offer everything, whether or not they will live to see those dreams realized.
When I looked around me at the "Lord's Acre" Fall Festival on Saturday and saw literally hundreds of guests enjoying the hospitality of our church, I realized that moments like that are what honor the saints more than any other. After all, they gave their time, talents, and resources not to honor themselves, but to honor God. And the greatest thing we can do to honor God is to offer the Good News of Christ to as many people as possible.
So, as we gather this Sunday for all the saints whose witness continues to inspire us, we really gather to honor the one in whose life they now live.
See you Sunday! Glory to God!
Grace and peace,
Pastor John |

Food Pantry BUMC is serving over 20 families on a weekly basis through the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry. The food pantry is a weekly mission outreach of our church to the community and we are able to share Christ with food that is donated by you and given out by church volunteers. Thanks for being the body of Christ! Here are a few of the items always needed. Canned vegetables, dry cereal, canned fruit, canned meat, pasta, pasta sauce and as always, donations of any kind are always welcome! God loves a cheerful giver.
To my church family: Thank you for all your cards, phone calls, & hugs since the death of Bevard. My family & I so appreciate your care for us immediately after his death and for the wonderful food you brought us to share with so many people between the service and the grave site. God Bless you all!

Library Book Review
10/25/2010 Book Reviews: "A Town Called Hope", Book 1 Prairie Rose & Book 2 Prairie Fire. Two books about the people of a small growing town in Kansas after the Civil War. There are problems between Yankees & Rebs, Irish & Cornish, and people of other nationalities who come together to learn how to build a town, accept others differences and pray together. Two real fun reads with characters you can relate to and enjoy their stories. Christian Fiction. Both are worth reading! *****

Preschool
BUMP would like to give a BIG Thank You to our friend Al Gamel. He has rescued us many times in the past few months. From fixing the water fountain to hanging bulletin boards. Al ~ YOU are the greatest!
We still have a few openings, if you know of someone who is preschool shopping.
BUMP is beginning to get ready for our annual Thanksgiving Feast. All students and their families have lunch together as one big family. It takes a lot of work to pull this off, but it is sooo worth it to have all of our little friends and their families break bread together. As a part of that preparation, we will be cleaning out both of the refrigerators and the freezers. If you have anything in them that you would like to keep, please label it with your name and the date. Anything without such a label or that has expired, will be thrown out. The date for the clean out is Monday, November 15th. Issue: 1 |
