July/2010

As part of the Body of Christ
and this congregation,
we will faithfully participate
in the ministries of the church
by our prayers, our presence,
our giving, and our service,
so that through our witness,
we can lead others in becoming
disciples of Jesus Christ
and thereby change the world.

John's Epistle
Blessings Abound

The email came to me completely out of the blue. It was an offer from Sean McCarther, son-in-law of former members, David and Connie Eldred, to perform a recital of music at Buckingham.

I have to admit that my first thought was, "What's the catch?" Regardless of the obvious connection that the Eldreds maintain with our congregation, it was difficult for me to imagine why someone of Sean's considerable gifts would choose our relatively small congregation for a performance with so many large churches in the area. And I wondered how it was that we could make it worth his time, especially when I found out that he and his accompanist, Joseph Neolliste, wanted to perform on Friday evening.

In fact, I sort of tried to talk him out of it. After consulting with some of our church leaders, we agreed that it was a long shot for us to provide a crowd of a significant size. So I laid it out there for Sean, who insisted that he and Joseph would be thrilled to perform for us no matter how many-or how few-were in attendance. They even offered to sing for us at both of our Sunday morning worship services. Almost reluctantly, I said, "OK."

Having heard them this past Sunday morning, I can't wait for Friday to arrive! What a blessing they were to our congregation in worship. Their eagerness to participate, the enthusiasm with which they shared their amazing gifts, was truly heartwarming. And to expect nothing in return ... well, the fact is you just don't see that very often.

I had already expected the blessings to come on Sunday, since I have been looking forward for several weeks to hearing our Youth ensemble, Revelation 21, sing again. Their sound is so sweet and simple, and having those young people up in the chancel, leading us in worship and praise, is just wonderful to behold. I can't thank Jonathan Reger for investing the time it is taking him to coordinate that ministry.

This is the way the life of faith works. Blessings abound when people share their God-given gifts with the world. The blessings come both for the receiver and for the giver. But it takes time and effort and perseverance, as well as generosity.

Our church is in the midst of investing heavily in our community. For the past several weeks, our education areas have been full to the brim-and running over, to tell the truth-with children and teenagers, as the BUM Preschool program has shared space with the YMCA Teen program and the Garland Free Lunch Program. I'm grateful to Susi Hanson, our amazing Preschool Director, and Linda Story, for taking lots of deep breaths and making it work. Why? Because their investment has allowed blessings to overflow, in spite of the challenges.

I can only ask you all this question: How are you sharing your gifts, so that blessings may abound, for you and others? God did not grant us these things so that we might keep them to ourselves. They are to be shared. The more we share them, the more they multiply, and the more blessings abound.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor John

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

We're writing to address an important issue our congregation is now facing, as well as to ask your help in responding to the situation. We hope that you will make a prayerful effort to respond in our time of need.

As with many-perhaps most-churches, we have been facing enormous financial challenges over the past two plus years. Until the spring of this year, we have been relatively unscathed by the economic recession, even experiencing real growth in our finances for 2010, as well as a small surplus after the books were settled for last year. It was a wonderful blessing, though the surplus only allowed us to replenish funds used in previous years, rather than providing additional resources that could be utilized.

Unfortunately, the recession seems to have caught up with us. Across the board, our giving is down significantly for 2010, approximately ten percent (10%).  At the same time, the costs of doing vital ministry have continued to escalate.  As far as our lay leadership can evaluate, there is no "problem" in the church, it is simply a sign that our members have been unable to give as much as they have in the past. We are confident there are multiple reasons for this and no simple answers.

In the long term, we see a bright future for our congregation. Many of our efforts
to reach into our community are bearing fruit even as we write this letter. We continue to receive guests weekly, some of whom have chosen to make BUMC their faith home this year. We see these efforts to be involved in the neighborhood and community as investments in our future that God is blessing and we believe the investments we are making in our buildings through capital improvements will only enhance our ability to attract and retain new members to our Family of Faith.

The short term picture, however, tells us that we must do two things immediately: lower our costs and raise our revenue. If we are not able to do both of these things successfully in the next two weeks, we may not have enough cash available to pay our most basic bills,
including payroll, without drastic measures. As lay leaders and staff, we pledge to do our part in controlling costs as much as possible.

We hope that you will join us, confident in our faith, by digging deep into your pockets to help us weather these difficult times. We expect that things will ease significantly as we enter the fall season, when typically, our costs are significantly lower and giving increases. We also realize that you may well be feeling the same pinch that the church budget is, so we simply make the following requests:
If you have fallen behind on your giving because you have been less regular in your attendance, please use this call as an opportunity to catch up; and
If it is within your means to add to your current giving, please do so immediately. No matter how small your extra giving may be, it will make a difference.

We believe that you want our church to grow and that, like me, you see the future as one of hope for our church. Please do not allow this challenge to dissuade you from that hopefulness. This is not the first time we have faced financial challenges together and it will not be the last. We must cling to the knowledge that God has called us to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ.

Grace and peace,

Words of Thanks!
The playground has had a mini makeover and some thank you's are in order.
For hauling, filling in and leveling the preschooler's favorite 'digging spot', THANK YOU to Josh Goode, Ryan Burrage, and
John & Luke Hanson. Two truckloads of dirt and a lot of work make a preschool full of excavators very happy!  We had 15 yards of "kiddie cushion" delivered on Thursday (July 8th). Our preschool campers witnessed the huge load being dumped onto the parking lot. There were a lot of "wow's", "cool's", and even a couple of requests to "do it again" from the little ones. That Friday morning, with a group of 25 YMCA kids to do the heavy work, the kiddie cushion was moved onto the fall zones of our playground. This is normally a back breaking, all day event when 10 of us old people have to move that load.  It took the Y Kids less than TWO HOURS!!! It was truly amazing to watch their enthusiasm. They loaded wheelbarrows with laughter, dumped them on the playgrounds in contests of good-natured strength, raked and spread the cushion with smiles, then ran back to do it all over again. Even the program director and executive director got in on the act. These kids will be going back to school soon and most of them will have more than 20 hours of community service by that time. Much of that service will have been done at our own church. It seems to me that we have been a blessing and are being blessed by these young men and women. THANK YOU so much!!

Library Book Review
Willow Springs. Jan Watson. In 1883, a17-year-old mountain girl, Copper Brown, marries a busy Lexington, Kentucky doctor she barely knows and moves into his family's city home. She slowly learns to adapt to her new role as a doctor's wife, but conflicts with her sister-in-law and other "straight-laced" members of society. She finds that working in her husband's office & helping the needy she meets there brings her a certain amount of peace. She takes on a young boy and his family and when tragedy strikes, she has to deal with many difficult situations, she surprises everyone and handles herself with poise and dignity.

Long Journey Home. Sharlene MacLaren. Don Mattson has lost his wife & daughter in a tragic accident & with them also goes his faith in God, which leads to him giving up his pastorate. He moves away from his family and memories there to a new place and a new job doing construction work with a friend who is in construction. At his apartment complex he meets the recently divorced neighbor with her baby and seems to be present to help her each time she has one of her many problems. Their friendship develops very slowly as both struggle with their feelings for each other and their beliefs in God.

Lady of the River. Deanna Crawford. Belinda Gregg is desperate to hide the family secret of her mother's bouts of delusional depression because it has caused so much upheaval in her family's life. When she meets Max Bremmer things change for both of them. His dream has been to explore the west with Lewis and Clark, but meeting Belinda changes his perspective. How their romance grows and her family finds a fuller life in the church and town makes for a fun, adventurous read.
