Rev Richard K Schlak, Executive Director for the Lutheran Hispanic Missionary Institute, traveled with his family to Venezuela and Colombia during the month of June and the first week of July. Richard provided updates from his trip and the full content is on our website. Some brief excerpts appear here:
Colombia:
God's hand was evident in many details of this trip. Pastor Sijifredo told me to expect up to 35 students; we had 75. The students came mostly from the congregation "El Redentor," but there were some - including a couple of pastors

- from other congregations. 39 of the students took the course for credit. The rest were auditing.
The topic - Worship and Song in the Church - has helped many students to clarify doubts and controversies, particularly in the area of traditional versus contemporary worship. Many students have expressed their appreciation for the course. Paola (one of the students) said, "Now I understand that Lutheran worship is not about what I like or don't like; it's about the Gospel."
Venezuela:
The intensive course on Worship and Song in the Church was sponsored by the Juan de Frías Theological Institute primarily for beginning theology students and secondarily as continuing education for pastors and other leaders in Venezuela. Pastor Abel García, the director of the Juan de Frías Institute, was very happy with the course materials that we used in the intensive and plans to use them as a regular part of the "Juan de Frías" curriculum.

Venezuela students in class with online students in Chicago and Caracas |
The intensive course met in Caracas, Venezuela, but a number of people participated via the Internet using web conferencing. Six students took the course for credit in Caracas itself, plus 2 more students for credit online (one from Venezuela and one from Chicago). In addition, we had another 3 people online and 4 people in Caracas who audited portions of the course (including Pastor Abel). Those students who were able to attend the course, came away very satisfied. The evaluations at the end of the intensive were uniformly very positive. Two of the students asked for permission to photocopy portions of the course to use in their own congregations.
