Free Dental Day 2010
|
On May 21st, we had a gloriously
successful Free emergency Day at the All About Smiles Dental Office. With
flyers distributed to all the community help locals, announcements on channel 7
morning news and over 5000 e mails sent to community leaders, churches and
businesses many patients responded. (Click on photo for Letter to the editor)
At 7:15 when I arrived there was a line
starting at the door. Before we even opened the doors at 8:20 (The clinic was
advertised to start at 9:00 AM.) we had over 20 people in line. I set out some
folding and patio chairs for those waiting and we needed that extra seating in
the reception area all day.
The team arrived for an 8 AM huddle and we
outlined protocol and duties. Morning Buttercream donuts gave us enough energy
to make it to lunch that was prepared by Desiree. Dr. Evelyn Caubauatan who
helped last year came to help again and stayed till after 6 PM. Dr. Maryam
Mohsenzadeh brought Tina the RDA that assists her in the Queen of the Valley's
Free Children's Mobile Dental Clinic. Also Dr. Amine Khory pitched in seeing a
few free patients in between his regularly scheduled patients.
We had 48 patients
arrive from as far away as San Francisco and Berkeley by the time we
closed the intake at 3 PM. Dr. Maryam had to go to a meeting at 3:30 but Dr.
Evelyn and I stayed till almost 7PM. We had to give rain checks to about 8
patients that we will see later. The entire team helped out and even Kayla our
intern helped out. The day would not
have been possible with out the extraordinary efforts of the auxiliary team
members. We did fillings, extractions, root canals, implant tightening and recementing.
Melanie even babysat while Dr. Evelyn treated the mom. |
A cup of Green Tea could keep you out of the dentist chair!
|
That's the conclusion of a new study published in Preventive Medicine,
reports Discovery News.
Green tea contains antimicrobial molecules called catechins that may promote
dental health, researchers claim.
"Green tea may have bacteriocidal effects, which would affect teeth, but
only if you drink it without sugar," said Alfredo Morabia, of Columbia University
in New York
and editor of Preventive Medicine, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new
research.
"They also reported that drinking sweet coffee was actually deleterious," he
added. "Coffee alone had no problem, but sweet coffee would actually make you
lose your teeth."
To reach the conclusion, Yasushi Koyama of the Tohoku University Graduate
School of Medicine and colleagues looked at more than 25,000 Japanese men and
women between age 40 and 64.
They found that men who drank at least one cup of tea a day were 19 percent
less likely to have fewer than 20 teeth (a full set including wisdom teeth is
32) than those who did not drink green tea. Tea-drinking women had 13 percent
lower odds.

Do Dentists do house calls?
|
A long time
friend and patient who has even been on flying doctor's trips with me needed a
favor. She asked me if I might consider a home dental visit. Her closest
friend, whom I will refer to as J, had a stroke 8 years ago and due to
complications and a dislocated shoulder has been bed bound for years. She is
unable to sit in a wheelchair and therefore has not been able to see a dentist
for many years. Her dental hygiene has suffered and her mouth was in very poor
condition including advanced decay, broken teeth and gum disease.

With some of the portable equipment and the kit I use when I go on missions I was able to set up a dental clinic in her home and with my wife's help we
worked on her for 3 hours. It took about 45 minutes each time to set up and then close
and pack up but the rewards are great. She is on the way to having a nice smile
again.
This is only the second time in my career
that I have set up a home clinic in Napa.
During the missions to Mexico,
India, Guatemala and El Salvador I use remote facilities from school rooms and Service Club buildings to churches and small
clinics in super small villages.
The Adec portable unit is connected to an on demand air compressor outside the
window. I have the digital x-ray images on a laptop near the patients left where there
is also a TV tray set up with all the supplies I needed for the work needed that day. Another visit or two should allow me to finish up her needed work.

A puppy gives comfort to our patient
|
As I was treating
a patient this month, much to my surprise, a little puppy stuck his cute head
out from the pocket pouch of the patient's sweat shirt!

This was the first time I have
had a dog in my treatment rooms. This
little guy was one of the cutest puppies I have seen and he certainly brought a
lot of comfort to our patient.
The whole office dropped by to
see "Peaches". Will this incident start a trend? I know of an orthodontist that
has a small dog in his office and loves to sit in the laps of the children as
they have their teeth treated.
I am a lover of dogs. Our
family have owned dogs for many years until my kids left for college.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor, Napa
Valley Register
I wish to announce that the winner of my second annual Do A Good
Deed Contest is Alana Freifeld, who wrote an essay describing her project, Hope
for Haiti,
which was a benefit for Haitian earthquake victims.
(See Napa Register article
of Tuesday, February 16.)
I was
especially impressed with her drive and passion for helping and altruism as
demonstrated by her ability to bring other students, business owners, and even
the Lincoln Theatre into the project.
Alana will receive a Dell laptop computer as winner.
My Do A Good Deed contest is designed for the youth of the
community to foster volunteerism and the giving of time, talent, and self for
the pure pleasure of selflessness which only comes when such gifts are donated. Students are asked to describe, in an essay,
a "good deed" they performed. I received
many essays this year which reinforces my belief that a great many of our youth
are positively directed with a heart for generosity.
My personal experiences with the Flying Doctors, Free Dental
Emergency Days, and my many humanitarian trips have reinforced a personal
passion for volunteerism which I love encouraging in our youth.
Congratulations, Alana Freifled, for your fabulous Good Deed! You are a true winner in life! Enjoy your new laptop!
Sincerely,
Adrian D. Fenderson, DDS
