Final market day of the 2011 Season. Stock up! Much of the late season harvest stores well in a cool, dry basement. Baked goods freeze well too! It looks to be a brisk, breezy day with no rain!
Look for our friends from Petey Possum's Hangout to set up if the weather is dry enough. Either way, check them out at One South Third Street. It's never to early to start your holiday shopping!
Thanks to our vendors who endured less than ideal weather and harvest conditions.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors, without whom, the market would not be possible:

Final Words and a Farewell
Four years, 104 market days later I can honestly say that this has been the best job I've ever had!
It turns out I had great training and the perfect foundation for the job. My parents raised us to garden. Even in the years that we lived in apartments, we rented a plot in the community garden. They taught us that when you till the soil and plant a seed you do more than harvest healthy food, you cultivate character and feed your soul. A legacy that I try to pass on to my own children.
Growing up in the great garden state of New Jersey, we learned that you never pass by a farmers market or roadside stand. In stopping you not only get fresh healthy food, but you meet new people, hardworking people with dirt on their hands and giant smiles on their faces.
In the last four years as Market Manager I have learned something new or met someone new each and every week. Here are the top 5 in no particular order:
- I know now that I missed out on a great opportunity to pursue Agricultural Science while studying at the University of Delaware.
- I have been inspired by the hard work, generosity and perseverance of my Amish friends.
- I have diversified my pallet through the great offerings of our vendors.
- I have met many of the people that make Oxford the great community that it is.
- My dad taught me that "the answer is NO, unless you ask." Well I've relearned this over and over and you can't underestimate the generosity of our community.
That said, the most important lesson of the moment is that try as I might to do it all, I just can't do it all and still do it well. I am very grateful for having had the opportunity to manage this market but now must pass the banner to the next person. With that I say farewell...but you can count on seeing me filling my market bag with the bounty of the harvest next season. Most sincerely, Judy |

Did You Know?
Halloween Holiday Trivia
- Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
- Jack o' Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.
- Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!
- Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.
- Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.
- The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.
