Microphone Check: An Important FCC Reminder

As you cross off the remaining items on your 2010 "to do" list, we encourage you to check it twice.

Hopefully, you have removed all 700MHZ wireless microphones from service. The FCC required these microphones to be pulled from service as of June 12th this year. That frequency has since been re-assigned to public safety.

If you still have units in operation, ExhibitOne can help you identify suitable alternatives for your specific application. Due to the ban on this equipment, ExhibitOne cannot repair or replace any 700MHZ microphones.

If you are unsure if your microphones are affected by this ban, please send an email to Info@ExhibitOne.com listing the name of the microphone manufacturer and its model number.

Belt Tightening in the AV World

With today's economy causing company-wide budget cuts - it's quite likely that audio visual departments are also facing lean times. Recently, AV Technology magazine offered some tips for those tightening the AV belt.

1. Plan - Develop and get senior management's signature on a plan that shows what you have, what you need and when you will need it, along with all associated costs. During difficult times, unbudgeted purchases can create the greatest challenges.

2. Remember the Little Things - It's quite easy to get focused on big items such as projectors etc., and forget about the things that keep them running, i.e. batteries, lamps, VGA cables, flash drives etc. Individually, they're inexpensive, but collectively they can add up to "real money."

3. Justification - Have specific and believable arguments to back-up each budgetary line item. Other departments are vying for the same dollars, so frame those arguments in some form of urgency (i.e. training requirements won't be met, programs can't be launched etc.)

4. Get a Champion - And of course, key to surviving the corporate jungle (during good times and bad) is to get the support from one or more members of upper management. The most likely candidates are those whose areas of responsibility would be negatively impacted by AV deficiencies (see #3).

3D: Déjà vu All Over Again

Does VHS versus Betamax ring a bell? How 'bout Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD?

Well, the world of consumer electronics/entertainment is at it again - promoting a technology before all of the standards are in place. Even though products boasting 3D capabilities are hitting store shelves,
there is still a lot to be worked out to ensure there is some form of standardization around 3D technology.

Just a sample of the issues still facing the consumer/entertainment industries includes: camera construction, depth of field, Parallax (change of view at different angles), encoding, disc manufacture...and the list goes on.

In the past, standardization issues have been hammered out within the consumer/entertainment industry itself. But, in perhaps a bit different twist from the past, some industry insiders believe household 3D will actually evolve from industries such as biomedicine, geology, military, simulations etc.

So, if you just have to have the latest and greatest - have at it.
After all, today's 3D will give you something to add to your collection tomorrow...right next to your Betamax and HD-DVD players.
