The TCACID continues to improve the Town Center area. Read about four of our projects here.

Mall Blvd improvement underway

The most visible is the construction on the east side of the Mall at the

I-575-exit. An additional lane is being added to the I-575 south bound off ramp heading west. There will be a barrier separating traffic on Barrett Pkwy and it will be only for commuters traveling to Mall Blvd. The existing right turn lane will remain for those who wish to continue west on Barrett Pkwy. An additional outbound lane on Mall Blvd will be added to separate drivers who wish to travel east on Barrett Pkwy. from drivers who wish to proceed straight ahead to the Marshall's shopping center. The new lane configuration and new traffic signalization will allow two lanes moving or turning at one time.

The project is a joint partnership between the TCACID and GDOT, with the CID funding the engineering and design and GDOT funding construction. Work will cease before the Thanksgiving holiday and start back in January. Total cost of the project is $1,965,670. Estimated completion date is summer, 2013.

 Noonday Creek Trail

This multi-phased walk/bike trail has been underway for several years, with some portions completed and others under construction.

Useable path

In 2011 a portion of the trail along US 41 between Barrett Pkwy and Cobb Pkwy at Noonday Creek was completed, and adjoins the 2.28 mile section of paved, multi-purpose trail running along portions of Noonday Creek, Vaughn Road, Cobb Place Blvd and Barrett Lakes Blvd. Completed in August 2010, that 2 ¼ mile trail has recently undergone major maintenance work and is in perfect shape for fall outings. Give it a try.

Final trail portion underway

Beginning at Barrett Lakes Blvd and continuing to Bells Ferry Road, the final phase is now under construction. Already visible is the path that has been cut from Duncan Road to Bells Ferry Road. Completion date is anticipated to be in the summer of 2014.

Total cost of the trail from Kennesaw Mountain to Bells Ferry Road will be $11,636,216 funded by the TCACIDCobb County DOTGA DOTand the National Park Service.

SCATS almost completed

The specific Adaptive Traffic Control System for the greater Town Center area is called SCATS.  SCATS uses computer software to automatically time the traffic signals in real time based on actual traffic conditions. This is especially useful in areas where changes in traffic challenge traditional signal coordination and time-of-day scheduling. SCATS reacts to existing traffic and adjusts signal-timing plans to improve traffic flow. A few of the obvious benefits of this system are: response to day-to-day and time-of-day changes in traffic, reduction delays during periods of unpredictable traffic, e.g. an early or late peak traffic period, an event at KSU, or an incident on I-75 or I-575; and, reduction of back-ups related to congestion resulting from crashes.

The overall project, running through and around the TCACID, should be completed in October of this year, well ahead of the holiday shopping season. The TCACID initiated the project with a study and GDOT is funding the entire application of the system. Total cost will be $4,027,000.

Big Shanty Road reconnection

Final cosmetic touches are being done to Big Shanty, however the road is open and offers direct access from Chastain Road east to Bells Ferry, bypassing congestion on Chastain Road.

Big Shanty is a $26 million project funded by the TCACID, Cobb County DOT, GA DOT, State Road and Tollway Authority and the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act.
