Connectivity for Commuters and Pedestrians The Big Shanty Connector will be completed in the spring of 2012, a $26 million project funded by the TCACID, Cobb DOT, GA DOT and US DOT. The project contains multi-use trails and bike lanes, but most importantly, it will relieve congestion on Barrett Parkway and Chastain Road by providing an alternative east/west corridor. Currently, Barrett Parkway from Cobb Parkway west 3.58 miles is being widened from a 4-land divided roadway to a 6-lane divided roadway. This project is being funded by the 2005 SPLOST Transportation Improvement Program at a cost of $21,771.184. The estimated completion date is summer, 2013. The Barrett project includes a multi-use trail that will connect the Kennesaw Mountain Trail to the Noonday Creek Trail at Cobb Parkway. Construction will begin this fall on the final phase of Noonday Creek Trail from Barrett Lakes Blvd to Bells Ferry Road with an estimated completion date of 2013. Once this phase is completed, walkers and bikers will be able to access the trail at Kennesaw Mountain and walk or bike to Bells Ferry Road (approximately six miles.) Other improvements on Barrett Parkway, Chastain Road and Cobb Parkway will be the installation of an Advanced Transportation Management System allowing real time management of traffic signals in the area --- a real asset during the holiday season, a traffic accident, or, any unexpected change in traffic movement. The Town Center Area CID continues to work with local, state and federal agencies to study ways to improve the safety, accessibility and mobility for both commuters and pedestrians. The end goal is to give a "sense of community" to the Town Center area.
