Bill Rayburn (left) and Dennis Tosh (middle) of FNC and Mick Kolassa (right) of Medical Marketing Economics are to discuss how they created these innovative companies and grew them into industry leaders.
"FNC and Medical Marketing Economics are such outstanding examples of companies that grew out of ideas by innovative entrepreneurs at the University of Mississippi into the thriving businesses and valued corporate citizens they are today," said Christy Knapp, vice president of the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation. "Our hope is that their stories will serve to inspire other aspiring entrepreneurs about the importance of innovation and perseverance."
Co-founded by Rayburn and Tosh, FNC develops software that helps the nation's major mortgage lenders streamline their processes, comply with government regulations and make informed decisions about the collateral backing their loans. Besides its headquarters in Oxford, the company has offices in Dallas and Costa Mesa, Calif.
Rayburn, the company's chief executive officer and chairman of the board, often speaks or sits on panels at major industry conferences. Before founding FNC, he and Tosh led a consulting firm specializing in seminars for bank regulatory agencies, financial institutions and appraisal firms.
The two former UM business professors also authored a series of real estate industry books and articles, including "Bankers Guide to Real Estate Appraisal Compliance" and "Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice," both of which have become recognized as industry standards.
Medical Marketing Economics is a consulting firm that specializes in the development of value-based marketing strategies for health care goods and services. The company combines academic theory with real-world medical marketing experience to provide comprehensive and useful guidance. Besides its headquarters near the Oxford Square, MME has offices in Montclair, N.J., and Oxfordshire, England. Before forming MME, Kolassa was associate professor of pharmacy administration and associate professor of marketing at Ole Miss. Recognized internationally as an expert on pharmaceutical pricing and value-based strategies, he previously served as director of pricing and economic policy at Sandoz, where he created and instituted that company's first pricing and health economics departments. "We are excited to help bring the Discovery Luncheon to north Mississippi," said Stacey Gaines, director of policy and community services for the Mississippi Technology Alliance. "It is a great opportunity to highlight what's going on in the region with technology, entrepreneurship and capital investments." The Northeast Mississippi Regional Innovation Council is a partnership of the University of Mississippi, Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation, Oxford Enterprise Center, Renasant Center for IDEAs, Northeast Mississippi Business Incubation System, Mississippi Technology Alliance and the U.S. Small Business Administration. ILED Training Held in Oxford
The Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation (EDF) in collaboration with the Northeast Mississippi Regional Innovation Council hosted MTA on January 29, 2009, to bring "Innovation Led Economic Development (ILED)" training to economic developers and those interested in furthering economic development to their areas. The 25+ participants in attendance learned that their regions can benefit from a strong focus on innovation commercialization, high performance entrepreneurship and capital formation as part of their overall economic development strategy, and should practice assessing regional innovation assets and social networks. Dr. Lyn Stabler and Bubba Weir provided an overview of global economic forces that amplify the importance of innovation-based companies for regional competitiveness and how communities can attract and grow these types of businesses.
Sessions on New Venture Commercialization and Angel Investing were also offered after the ILED Training. Dr. Randy Goldsmith, President of MTA, introduced "The Goldsmith Commercialization Model" which forms the basis for explaining the process and stages of venture development from start-up through growth and maturity. Participants learned how to identify commercialization opportunities and high performance companies, and practiced using the Goldsmith Model to assess and entrepreneur's stage of venture development to determine what type of assistance might be needed.
Dr. Goldsmith also conducted a session on Angel Investing that reviewed the types and sources of investment capital available to Mississippi companies, including grants and loans, with emphasis on private equity investment and what investors expect to hear from an investor presentation. Participants learned more about the Mississippi Seed Fund, Mississippi Angel Fund, and local Angel Investor Groups around the state. They also learned more about MTA's efforts to form Capital Coalitions and Angel Investor Groups in their local communities.
The Northeast Mississippi Regional Innovation Council is comprised of the University of Mississippi, the North Mississippi Enterprise Initiative, CDF in Tupelo, the Renasant Center for Ideas, Tupelo; the Northeast MS Business Incubation System and the Oxford-Lafayette County EDF. The council was one of several state recipients of SBA grant funding to foster entrepreneurial development throughout Mississippi.

New Group to Focus on Oxford's Young Professionals
By Alyssa Schnugg
Oxford Eagle Staff Writer
The Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce has created a networking group for Oxford's younger professional generation.
The Young Professionals of Oxford held its kick-off meeting recently on the patio at The Library Bar on the Square.
Pam Swain, vice president of the chamber, said the idea for the group began around December by a small group of people who were interested in starting a group for Oxford's professionals, ages 21 to 45.
"This is something Oxford has needed for a long time," Swain said. "This will be a monthly opportunity to get together and network among other professionals."
The group will provide social, professional and networking opportunities for young professionals who are striving to create a more energetic and connected community.
Brian Mathias, membership chairman, said there isn't currently an opportunity for people working in Oxford who are 21-45 to network.
"While we grow, the group will be more for networking - meet and greet," he said. "As we get more organized and our membership grows, we will have different civic functions like fundraisers."
The kick-off event featured crawfish and door prizes. A membership drive will offer free memberships for one year to those who join YPO and get involved in the front end.
"We're very excited about this," Mathias said. "Our young professional population is growing tremendously. It's time to get together and help grow Oxford."
