Greetings! Right now Rev. Karen and I are leading a small group in the gifts discovery class entitled Serving from the Heart. That group has two more sessions, September 30th and October 7th. After that, beginning October 14th we will be offering two separate options for those who wish to "Come to the Well." For four Wednesday evenings Rev. Karen will be leading a class in Wesleyan Traditions. They will be looking at and learning more about some of the distinctively Wesleyan beliefs and practices which form our identity as United Methodist Christians. It will be interesting and beneficial for both newer and long time United Methodists.
During that same four week period beginning October 14th I will be leading a class on Church Membership. I plan to come to the class prepared with material relevant to the topic. But, I also want to be very flexible and allow members of the group to ask questions and raise issues they consider relevant. So, we will be looking at a variety of material. Some of it will be focused on what it means to be a member of First United Methodist. My prayer will be that we learn together and grow stronger in our commitment to Christ and the Church. My hope is that some of you who are newer members or some who are considering membership will come be part of the class. All of you, regardless how long you have been a member, are welcome and I believe the time together will be engaging and encouraging.
After that series of four Wednesday evenings Rev. Karen and I are going to work together on a four week class focusing on the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. Perhaps you know that every four years the General Conference gives deep consideration to a variety of significant issues. The result is that section of The Book of Discipline which is known as the Social Principles. Of course, these statements focus on a variety of questions, many of them are rather mundane, many of them address controversial issues. If you have ever wondered about the United Methodist position on a specific issue, this will be interesting to you. This is not designed to be a debate of all the current "hot topics". Rather, it will be an opportunity to learn about the statements from the 2008 General Conference and share with each other. We all know that a variety of perspectives on a wide range of issues will be represented in our congregation. Our diversity is a part of the richness of our church. I think it will be interesting.
As always, Wednesday evenings begin with a fellowship meal. We are now eating together in room 117. That is the new room at the end of the hall in the education wing. This room is a great part of the new building. The food is served buffet style, and costs $6.00 for adults. There is also the choice of eating salad for $2.00. I hope you will find these offerings attractive and "Come to the Well". There is no requirement to pre-register for any of the classes starting October 14th. We may use the Blue Card to help us have an idea of haw many to prepare for, but everyone will be welcome. You may never have been part of a Wednesday evening class. October 14th would be a great time to start coming to the well!
God Bless You, Steve Campbell |
