Youth
CROP Walk 2009
Sunday, October 11
Loose Park

Leave church at 12:30pm and return in time for Youth Group.

Participants are asked for a $5 donation to walk.  If you want to purchase this year's t-shirt it will be $6 for the shirt. ( So a total of $11 if you want a t-shirt and to walk!)

For the 2nd year FUMC Youth are participating and accepting donations for CROP Walk.  This year's theme is Enough For All and we will once again be asking for volunteers to walk and to donate money toward this wonderful cause.  The money collected goes to fight hunger locally, state wide, nationally and world wide.
Greetings!

It was a really "Big Day!" I hope you who were present enjoyed it as much as I did! We had a large number of persons who were responsible for various aspects of the day. I can't begin to name all the tasks and all the persons who contributed. There are just too many! But, each one made a valuable contribution.
Each one excelled in their task! So, I just thank all of you who made a contribution to this great event.

The Big Day lifted our spirits. It reminded us what a strong congregation we are. We had fun, but it was more than fun. What we experienced was great music, warm fellowship, good cooking, and the blessing of our new building addition. I think the Sunday School time calls us to give thanks for the mission outreach we share and the lives touched by Christ through us. It was Big.

Now, let me give you an early reminder of something else Big which is coming up. Last year we did the first ever First United Methodist Church Christmas Music Festival. It was grand. As soon as it was over the conversations began about "next year..." So, where will you be on Sunday afternoon December 13th at 4:30 p.m.? Put it on your calendar now so you can be right here! I know that is several weeks away, but write it down. You just don't want to miss this! It is a great event for inviting friends, neighbors, and family members.

I just came back to my Study from being with Learning Ladder students and teachers. The children come to the Sanctuary once a month for "Bible Time." I talk with the Tuesday-Thursday classes. Karen talks to the Wednesday-Friday classes. We share a story from the Bible. Today it was Noah and the Ark. The children are lively and interested. They are responsive and enjoy participating. It is a blessing to share this time with them. This is one more ministry through which we touch lives and witness to the love of Christ. I give God thanks for this ministry and the people who make it work so well.

You know this weekend is Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival. We have our Pie Booth. Thank you to all of you who are helping by setting up, baking, or volunteering. It is an important presence in our community. Come by, and have a piece of Pie! Proceeds raised by this effort help our Inviting Ministries efforts.

We are back to the regular worship schedule this weekend. What happens when you attend? You fulfill a vow you made to God. You make a public witness. You nurture your soul. You strengthen the church. I hope to see you.

Blessings,
Steve Campbell

H1N1 Influenza

MEMO from the Congregational Health Ministries Taskforce of the Creative Ministries Team  (Contact:  Julie Taylor at fcnjulie@gmail.com)

Good morning.  Many of you have likely heard questions from the people you serve about H1N1 and the coming flu season.  H1N1 is a brand new influenza virus, and although it has so far been mild in the United States, it has worried many people.

Local public health departments and their partners have been working diligently since April to prepare for a large number of flu cases across Missouri.  We know seasonal flu kills nearly 36,000 people every year and hospitalizes 200,000.  What we don't know yet is how the H1N1 influenza will impact our communities this fall and winter.

Vaccination is the gold standard of protection against influenza.  Seasonal flu vaccine will not protect against the new H1N1 virus, but it will protect against other flu viruses that are likely to circulate this season.  We encourage everyone to get a seasonal flu shot as soon as they are available.  Check with your local public health department about seasonal flu vaccine availability in your community.

A vaccine to protect against H1N1 is currently in clinical trials.  Local public health departments expect to receive a limited shipment of H1N1 vaccine in mid- to late October, followed by additional shipments throughout the fall and winter.  Current tentative recommendations suggest a person may only need one H1N1 vaccine to gain protection against the new virus.

The first shipments of H1N1 vaccine available will be prioritized to those most at risk for severe illness and complications from H1N1.  Unlike seasonal flu, this does not include senior adults.  Seniors have been the age group least impacted by H1N1 and have even shown some immunity to the virus.  H1N1 vaccine priority groups will include pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of children less than six months old, health care and emergency services workers with direct patient care, children 6 months old through 4 years old, and children 5 to 18 with chronic medical conditions.  These groups will be expanded as more vaccine becomes available.

The federal government assures us that they will continue manufacturing vaccine until every U.S. resident has been offered an H1N1 vaccination.  But keep in mind it may take weeks or even months for everyone to be vaccinated.

In the meantime, we need your help to protect our families and our communities from all types of flu.  By working together utilizing proven disease prevention methods, we can slow the spread of flu in our communities.  Local public health departments and their partners across Missouri have collaborated to create a grassroots campaign called "Fight the Flu."  This campaign encourages individuals to get vaccinated, wash their hands, keep a distance from people who are sick and stay home when they are sick themselves.  Fact sheets, guidance, posters and additional materials can be found on the campaign's website at www.fightthefluMO.com.   We invite you to become familiar with the materials on the website, and use them in your facilities and with your members as you see fit.

Research shows us that people need to hear information from seven sources before they make a life change.  Will you join us in being one of those seven voices for the families you serve?  Encourage your members to join us as we Fight the Flu!

Thank you for your partnership in this effort!
