Greetings!

         Dear Friends,

            Yesterday, August the 27th, was the first day of class for students in our Learning Ladder Preschool. I had occasion to walk down the hall in the Education wing this morning. It was a delight! A couple of the classes already had art projects out where they could be seen. One of the classes was gathering in the music room. I had the chance to greet several staff members. Several of the children spoke or waved. Well, it was just good to be there for a few minutes. I am always impressed with the quality of the program. It is inspiring to think of the number of young lives influenced by this ministry. We should all rejoice over all that is represented by Learning Ladder. It is a powerful opportunity to make a difference in the community. It shapes the future. It opens the doors of the church in a very positive, inviting way! I hope you know what an asset this ministry is for FUMC. I also hope you will join me in supporting these teachers and students in our prayers.

            Someone asked if there is a reason we are doing this "Big Day" on September 13th.   Well, there are several. It is fall, and time to do something special to get us together. We now have a space for a big church dinner. We seldom have the opportunity to see the folks who attend other worship services. We want to plan events which allow us to invite the community to come join us. It provides a great opportunity to publicize and kick off our fall activities. Wouldn't it be great to hear all our choirs sing together? Well, I could tell you more, but the biggest reason for the Big Day, is it sounds like fun. It will be great music, great fellowship, great food. That is enough. I just hope you will be here! And, bring a friend! Both this week and next an invitation will be inserted in each bulletin. Please take the invitation, pray about it, and give it someone you know. This, along with your personal invitation, will bring many new guests to this special event.

            On a personal note, Nancy and I want to say thank you, again. Many of you have kept her in your prayers these last few weeks. There have been a number of cards, calls and emails. We learned this week her biopsy was negative. To know this is a great relief. In all likelihood she will be having radiation therapy and the prognosis is extremely good. We are grateful for this encouraging news. Thank you for your prayers, support, and encouragement.

            I hope to greet you in worship this weekend!

            Sincerely,

            Steve Campbell
Fifth Sunday for Missions
The Flood Buckets will be out again this weekend for our Fifth Sunday Mission Offering.  This month the offering will support a new mission opportunity for this congregation called the Costa Rica Reverse Mission Project.  More information about this upcoming effort will be available this weekend.
OPEN GYM
Every Thursday night we have our Family Life Center open for half-court basketball and volleyball. One volleyball net is set up and the other side of the gym is open for basketball.  Anyone who wants to play, regardless of age, is welcome to attend. We begin every Thursday evening at 7:00pm.
THE BIG DAY - SEPTEMBER 13

  ONE BIG SUNDAY SCHOOL
ONE BIG WORSHIP CELEBRATION
ONE BIG MEAL
A BIG, BIG, BIG DAY

All youth and adults are invited to join us at 9:00am for a BIG Sunday school in the sanctuary celebrating our involvement with local missions. We will hear from:
          The Della Lamb children's choir;

          Marilyn Graham, our newest member, who is a graduate of Hillcrest Transitional Housing and benefited from the apartment that we sponsor in Independence;

          A homeowner who has benefited from our work with Habitat for Humanity in Independence and will talk about their journey to ownership.

We will celebrate worship with a single BIG service at 10:30am.
We will have a BIG choir during worship.
We will follow the service with a BIG lunch in the new family life center.
What a great BIG day. Plan on being in attendance.
We will have our regular worship service on Saturday at 5:30pm.

POTLUCK LUNCH
Please join us for a potluck lunch.  It will be a great way for us to fellowship with friends and a chance to make new friends.  Brisket, hot dogs, drinks and table service will be provided. Please bring your specialty dish (salad, veggies, dessert, etc.) to add to the festivities and fun.  If you have questions about food, call Sheila Solon at 229-0218.
FALL FESTIVAL PIE BOOTH
Pie Booth Workers Needed At The Fall Fun Festival Pie Booth.  If you like meeting people and having a good time watching the fun, then volunteering to work at this year's Fall Fun Festival Pie Booth is for you.  The shifts will be two hours long and it's amazing how fast the time flies.  Watch for information in the bulletin and newsletter on how to sign up.  Everyone is welcome to participate and have a good time, and don't forget to bake that favorite fruit pie to be sold.  All proceeds go to support Inviting Ministries and other organizations and projects throughout the church.  For more information contact Ray at 509-7570.

PIE SEASON  Apple, blackberry, cherry, gooseberry, peach, raspberry, rhubarb, strawberry-you name the flavor and you'll find people who love 'um. If you haven't had a chance to complete your volunteer commitment form (included in the church bulletin)  to provide pies, brownies or your time for the annual Blue Springs Fall Festival pie booth, then please complete the form today and give it to one of the volunteers at the "Pie Information Table" in the narthex.  Pies can be dropped by the church narthex as scheduled or at the booth on Main Street any of the days of the festival.  For more information contact Ray at 509-7570.
Our Table of Plenty
There is a table in the narthex for all you gardeners to bring your surplus vegetables to make them available to others.  If you have something extra, just put it on the table.  If you would like to have some fresh vegetables, take what you want and leave a donation in the basket.  All donations will go toward our apportionments to our conference.
New Class for Stephen Minister Training
We are planning a new class for training Stephen Ministers to begin in September. We have not decided the time for the class, but we do know that the class will not meet on Wednesday nights.  For planning purposes and application forms, please contact Janice Patillo, 224-4185, Jo Perrin, 228-7703, or Rev. Karen Taylor, 229-8108.   Please join us in this ministry.
JOB CLUB
In response to the current economic conditions facing a number of our members, First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs is starting a new Job Club to provide support for those in search of employment opportunities.  The group will meet at 7:00pm every other Tuesday beginning September 1 in room 103.  The group will discuss job search skills, interviewing techniques and share leads on potential job possibilities.  Guest speakers will be invited to address the group from time to time.  We encourage anyone in need of job search support to attend the first meeting to help form the direction of the club.
REBUILDING SESSIONS
We are offering "Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends" beginning September 28.  This is for people who have experienced the end of a love relationship.  A minimum of four is required to make the class.  Please contact the church office, 229-8108, or Jo Perrin, 228-7703, if you are interested.
