Greetings!

Last week we had an awesome week of Vacation Bible School.  Camp E.D.G.E. was the theme where the kids "Experienced and Discovered God Everywhere."     Throughout the week 150 kids participated, led by 25 youth and 18 adults.  It was a thrill to walk throughout the building to see the kids singing, listening to stories, playing games and making crafts.   We are grateful for the generous support of supplies and financial gifts that enabled us to offer this important ministry well under budget.  Thanks to Angie Trent and crew for their excellent leadership.

On Sunday 17 Mid-high youth and seven adults left for Springfield on their Volunteer in Mission Trip.  It certainly has been a busy summer here at FUMC.  Plans for the fall are well under way and we know you will want to find a place to get connected.

Please mark Sunday, September 13, on your Calendar for "The Big Day."  We will have one big Sunday school class, one big worship service with one big choir, followed by one big pot-luck meal.  It will be a grand day to join together.  I know you will want to be here!

Be sure to order your "First Wear" shirts.  Orders can be placed through this weekend, August 9.  They will be available in time to wear on the Big Day.

Rev. Steve and Nancy are on vacation, and we pray they have a safe and restful time away traveling the north land.

We look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend, as we consider one of Jesus' "I Am" statements where Jesus says "I am the bread of life."

EDUCATOR APPRECIATION DAY
August 22 and 23 we will recognize teachers, administrators, and district employees in our church family with prayer.  If you are a teacher or administrator please make sure the office has your name, school, and what you teach so we can present a list of folks in a special insert for the bulletin.  Call the office at 229-8108.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Save the Date-Saturday, August 15, we will be putting a crew together to work on the Habitat House being built in Sugar Creek, MO.  If you are interested in working that day, send an email to Reed Alberg at ralberg@firstumcbs.org.  We will also need a group or individual that would like to provide lunch for the work crew.  If that's you, send Reed an email.
OPEN GYM

Every Thursday night we have our Family Life Center open for half-court basketball and volleyball. One volleyball net is set up and the other side of the gym is open for basketball.  Anyone who wants to play, regardless of age, is welcome to attend. We begin every Thursday evening at 7:00pm.
THE BIG DAY - SEPTEMBER 13

  ONE BIG SUNDAY SCHOOL
ONE BIG WORSHIP CELEBRATION
ONE BIG MEAL
A BIG, BIG, BIG DAY

All youth and adults are invited to join us at 9:00am for a BIG Sunday school in the sanctuary celebrating our involvement with local missions. We will hear from:
          the Della Lamb children's choir;

          Marilyn Graham, our newest member, who is a graduate of Hillcrest Transitional Housing and benefited from the apartment that we sponsor in Independence;

          A homeowner who has benefited from our work with Habitat for Humanity in Inde-pendence and will talk about that experience.

We will celebrate worship with a single BIG service at 10:30am.
We will have a BIG choir during worship.
We will follow the service with a BIG lunch in the new family life center.
What a great BIG day. Plan on being in attendance.
We will have our regular worship service on Saturday at 5:30pm.

Kathy and Chuck Ford extend an invitation to the congregation to attend a musical recital of their students on Sunday, August 9, in the sanctuary from 7:00 to 8:30pm.  This will be a performance of students who participated in the annual MAMA (Mid-America Music Association) contest.

FUMC Guide Book & Directory
Update Membership Information

Does our church database have YOUR family membership record correct?
Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven't already done so).
It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year.
Have you changed your phone number?  Have you moved?  Are you preparing to move soon?  Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record?  Do you want your record published?
If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the new Guide Book & Directory will be correct.  Contact the church office via phone (229-8108) or e-mail (
office@firstumcbs.org).

FUMC Guide Book & Directory-Advertising Opportunity
We are in the process of updating the annual Guide Book & Directory for our church.  This book will provide helpful information about our church and directory information for our church family.  As last year, the book will be provided at no cost to our church, including the mailing to each family, and is being subsidized by the local businesses who advertise in it.  If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office at 229-8108 or email to office@firstumcbs.org.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser.  It "does pay" to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
