Greetings!

Recently I asked you to read a passage of scripture in preparation for worship. I was very pleased when several people mentioned to me they had read that passage before coming to Worship! If some people had the opportunity to say something about it, I can only assume there were others who had read it but did not mention it to me. Well, I am asking you again.

The reading for this week is 2 Samuel 7:1-14a. It is the story of King David's desire to build God and temple and God's rejection of the notion. God then follows by informing David that it is God who will build David's house. The event is full of deep meaning. At least one question has to do with how God is served by Kings and by ordinary human beings. It also has to do with the very nature of God and the relationship God desires with individuals. All in all it is a very instructive passage of Scripture. I warn you ahead of time. It could re-orient our ideas of what God wants of us and how we respond to God's action in our lives. I hope you will be here for one of the worship gatherings this weekend.

The "Big Day" on September 13th is getting bigger. More of the specifics about the fellowship meal will be published soon. One thing I want you to remember is that however big it is, it will not be big enough if you are not here! This weekend there will be a display of "First Wear" in the Narthex. It is exciting. I have a picture in my mind of many of us wearing our FUMC shirts to the "Big Day".

While these items are very reasonably priced there is a little bit of profit in their sale. All the proceeds will go into a "Table and Chair" fund. As the Trustees determine the style and type of table and chairs most suitable for the Multi-Purpose Room we will use this fund, and other donations, for these important furnishings.

You have been hearing about Vacation Bible School. There are still some items needed. They are advertised on the kiosk at the Education entrance. VBS is an important event. I trust VBS, the children and leaders, will be in your prayers. Have you told a youngster you know about VBS?

On another matter, Rev. Bill Simmer has written a wonderful book entitled "The Gospels in Rhyme." It is insightful and creative. Bill has decided that proceeds from sale of the book will be donated to children orphaned by AIDS. So, it is a great book, and a very worthy cause. The book can be ordered for $12.95 by going to Amazon.com and searching by the title. Bill, we thank you for this inspiring work. I am confident many of you will want to own a copy!

           Grace and Peace,
           Steve Campbell

FUMC Guide Book & Directory
Update Membership Information

Does our church database have YOUR family membership record correct?
Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven't already done so).
It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year.
Have you changed your phone number?  Have you moved?  Are you preparing to move soon?  Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record?  Do you want your record published?
If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the new Guide Book & Directory will be correct.  Contact the church office via phone (229-8108) or e-mail (
office@firstumcbs.org).

FUMC Guide Book & Directory-Advertising Opportunity
We are in the process of updating the annual Guide Book & Directory for our church.  This book will provide helpful information about our church and directory information for our church family.  As last year, the book will be provided at no cost to our church, including the mailing to each family, and is being subsidized by the local businesses who advertise in it.  If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office at 229-8108 or email to office@firstumcbs.org.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser.  It "does pay" to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
