OFFERING ENVELOPES
There are 156 packets of envelopes that have not been picked up yet. If you have been receiving offering envelopes in the mail, your next set of envelopes is available to pick up in the narthex. You may use the envelopes either weekly or monthly, as best meets your needs. When you get to your last, or second to last, envelope, you MUST call the office and request more. Your help picking up your envelopes will help the church save money. |

YOUTH MISSION TRIPS GARAGE SALE
The Garage Sale for the youth mission trips was very successful. $1,600 was raised and will help pay expenses for this year's youth mission trips. Equally important is the fact that it was the first event to be held in the new Family Life Center. The Garage Sale was also made available to Hope House Shelter in Lee's Summit. The youth appreciate your support of the Sale with your donations and your purchases. |
BELL CHOIR OPENINGS
There are openings in the Glory Ringers and Spirit Ringers bell choirs that practice at 5:30 and 6:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Kathy Ford, and the Rhapsody Ringers bell choir that practices at 7:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Janie Wilson. Bell choirs play in worship once a month. Bell ringing is good mental and physical exercise. Older people are learning to ring to keep their minds active and because it is a sociable hobby that allows them to make new friends. Knowledge of bell ringing is preferable but not necessary - we will be happy to teach you. Just come along to a practice on Wednesday nights and you are welcome to watch us ringing. |

Greetings!
The big news here this week is that the Family Life Center addition has passed inspection and the city of Blue Springs has issued our Temporary Certificate of Occupancy! The Building Committee said, just before the Open House, that they hoped we could actually begin using the facility by May 1. They were right on target! This is a great moment for us! Now, you may wonder why it is a "Temporary" Certificate of Occupancy. We will not receive a final certificate until the whole project is completed, including the landscape plan. There is still a lot to do outside, but the weather has not been very cooperative for landscapers the last couple of weeks! The plan is ready to go, and the workers from the nursery will begin sometime soon. Until that part of the project is complete, we can make use of the building under this temporary permit.
Some of you may still plan to make a financial commitment to the "Expanding Ministries" capital campaign. I hope you will do that if you have not already. It is needed. It may be important to you to be able to say, "I helped put this wonderful building here." There are commitment cards available at the Information Table in the narthex and also in the church office.
We have the custom here of electing lay leadership to serve terms coinciding with the Annual Conference appointment year. That means our officers are elected for annual terms beginning July 1 and ending June 30. We will continue that custom, and the slate of officers for election will be presented at a special Church Conference at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday June 10. We will meet in the sanctuary and our District Superintendent, Susan Cox-Johnson, will preside. The agenda will be the election of Local Church Officials after hearing the report from the Lay Personnel Committee. It is one of the strengths of our system of church government that some offices have limits set by the Discipline. First UMC also has a policy limiting years of service on committees. This means we are in the habit of including new persons and raising up new leadership. I hope, if you are asked, you will be willing to serve. If you are one whose term is coming to an end, please know your efforts have been appreciated! Put the date for the Church Conference on your calendar.
This is the last weekend to look over the services and items being offered through the "Fan the Flame" effort. I really appreciate all the work and enthusiasm which has gone into this! Be sure to take a good look at the board this weekend. After this, those treasures and opportunities will go away! In addition to being fun, using individual gifts and talents, meeting some new friends, this will also raise some money for the ministries of FUMC! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this!
This weekend we celebrate Holy Communion in all our worship services. Karen and I have asked the Communion Stewards to prepare the trays with individual cups for all the services. We will not offer the Chalice this time. This decision simply reflects our awareness that the flu is on our minds. In fact, I think very few germs are passed by using the Chalice; but this way we know we are being as careful as possible. I look forward to seeing you this week in worship! Sincerely, Steve

HILLCREST WALK FOR THE HOMELESS Hillcrest Walk for the Homeless is an annual spring event that raises awareness and funds to support Hillcrest in its mission to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency. Participating in the Saturday morning, May 16, Walk for the Homeless is an excellent way to show your support for Hillcrest and the families served. Getting pledges is encouraged, but if that is not your thing, your participation is still very much desired. Although we are not officially forming a team, Jane Rosendahl has volunteered to organize carpooling from the church to the walk starting location near Independence Square. Contact her at 224-5660. Go online to register at this link, click on Walk for the Homeless, then Eastern Jackson County Walk. If you have any questions about the walk itself, call Hillcrest at 461-0468.

CDC Update -Swine Flu CDC is working very closely with officials in states where human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) have been identified, as well as with health officials in Mexico, Canada and the World Health Organization. This includes deploying staff domestically and internationally to provide guidance and technical support. CDC has activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate this investigation. Laboratory testing has found the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir and has issued interim guidance for the use of these drugs to treat and prevent infection with swine influenza viruses. CDC also has prepared interim guidance on how to care for people who are sick and interim guidance on the use of face masks in a community setting where spread of this swine flu virus has been detected. This is a rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide new information as it becomes available. There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. For the latest information, go to:
