GOLF LEAGUE
The First Methodist Golf League plays on every Tuesday. We tee off at 9:00am at Pleasant Hill Golf Course at 1600 Country Club Drive, 1/2 mile east of 7 Highway. We welcome men and women of all skill levels. We play 9 holes. That reduces the time each week to approximately four hours including fun, fellowship, and travel time. For more information contact: Bob Cravens at 228-4298. |
BELL CHOIR OPENINGS
There are openings in the Glory Ringers and Spirit Ringers bell choirs that practice at 5:30 and 6:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Kathy Ford, and the Rhapsody Ringers bell choir that practices at 7:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Janie Wilson. Bell choirs play in worship once a month. Bell ringing is good mental and physical exercise. Older people are learning to ring to keep their minds active and because it is a sociable hobby that allows them to make new friends. Knowledge of bell ringing is preferable but not necessary - we will be happy to teach you. Just come along to a practice on Wednesday nights and you are welcome to watch us ringing. |
HILLCREST WALK FOR THE HOMELESS Hillcrest Walk for the Homeless is an annual spring event that raises awareness and funds to support Hillcrest in its mission to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency. Participating in the Saturday morning, May 16, Walk for the Homeless is an excellent way to show your support for Hillcrest and the families served. Getting pledges is encouraged, but if that is not your thing, your participation is still very much desired. Although we are not officially forming a team, Jane Rosendahl has volunteered to organize carpooling from the church to the walk starting location near Independence Square. Contact her at 224-5660. Go online to register at this link, click on Walk for the Homeless, then Eastern Jackson County Walk. If you have any questions about the walk itself, call Hillcrest at 461-0468.

Greetings!
This weekend in worship Rev. Karen is going to lead us in a conversational sermon. She and I will begin a discussion of Resurrection Faith. The topic is so appropriate to the church season. The Holy Spirit bears witness in us to Christ's Resurrection. The Spirit is at work in us to bring us to new life by drawing us ever closer to God. Resurrection faith fills us with love, joy, and hope. The discussion will focus on the fact that all of our lives have some difficulties and challenges. Sometimes they are impacted by tragedy. How is it that some persons, even with all of life's difficulties, grow in faith, hope, and love while some become negative, bitter and angry? What an engaging question. Karen and I will begin the discussion. We will ask Kay Thomas, a member of the congregation, to join us, and then Karen will open the conversation to the congregation. I hope you will participate, and my prayer is that we will all grow in the kind of faith God wants to give us. Keep us in your prayers, and don't miss this unique worship event.
As I sit in my study this afternoon, the air is full of the sounds of heavy equipment. The contractors are working on taking out the construction road and getting the lawn ready for restoration. This has served a valuable purpose for our construction phase, but is no longer needed. Other work has progressed this week on the Family Life Center. The landscape people will be here soon. The grading is all but finished around the building. We are getting very close! The Building Committee has expressed the hope we will have a Certificate of Occupancy by the end of the month. We hope so!
Have you made a financial investment in the Family Life Center? Of course, many of you have and are already faithfully giving for this cause. If you have not done so, it is not too late! Your gift of any size will be a valuable addition to this effort. It is needed. There are "Expanding Ministries" cards at the Information Table and available from the office. This addition to our building is going to change the future of First United Methodist Church. Wouldn't you like to be able to say joyfully, "I helped"?
Please read on in this PastorGram. There are so many wonderful things happening in our life together. Take note of the Men of Praise and their unique ministry at Lansing State Prison. Be sure to take a look at what is still offered through "Fan the Flame." Remember the Garage Sale to support the Youth Volunteer in Mission Trips. And there is more.
This week some of us began a study of Dr. Hal Knight's book, Eight Life-Enriching Practices of United Methodists. In the book he asks, "Do you want to know and love God more fully, as you are known and loved by God?" It is an essential question for members of that group, and indeed, for every Christian. Are you growing in love and knowledge, or do you have all you want? Do you hunger for God or just want to know the minimum requirements? Methodists believe growth in grace is possible at every stage of our relationship with Christ. God's immeasurable love for us offers us life abundant. God will bless your desire to grow.
Grace and Peace to You,
Steve Campbell |

The Men of Praise ~Sharing Music in Prison "I was in prison, and you visited Me ...when you did it to the least of My people, you did it to Me." (Matthew 25: 36, 40) The Men of Praise perform at the Lansing Correctional Facility on Saturday, April 25. The performance is part of the Arts in Prison program, a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of artistic opportunities for the inmates. The Arts in Prison program has provided a choir for the minimum security population of the prison for many years. A new choir, the Tower Choir, has been added to the program. The Tower Choir is a men-only choir serving medium security inmates, and this concert is the Tower Choir's first performance! The Men of Praise are honored to be a part of this historic moment. The concert is a joint effort of the Tower Choir, the Men of Praise, and the Men of Note from Lee's Summit United Methodist Church. Mrs. Peggy Forstad will conduct a combined chorus for five songs. The Tower Choir will then sing two songs by themselves. The Men of Praise, conducted by Carolyn Gordanier, will sing two songs, and a group of men from the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church, conducted by Larry Keisker, will sing two songs. The Men of Praise are making two trips to Lansing-a rehearsal on Thursday, April 23, followed by the concert on Saturday, April 25. The intense security involved in order to participate has been eye-opening, to say the least. The audience will be fellow inmates. If all goes well, the concert will be videotaped, allowing the performance to be shared outside the prison's walls. The Men of Praise ask for your prayers as they go forth to share God's love through the powerful ministry of music.
