Lenten Offering "For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat." Isaiah 25:4 NRSV Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. In our busy world, Lent provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns, to pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've done and failed to do, and to be generous to those in need.
During Lent we are receiving a special offering to benefit Hillcrest Transitional Housing. This offering will support the ministry of Hillcrest and go to support the apartment we sponsor. Offering envelopes are available in the narthex. Bring your offering anytime during Holy Week. |

For a small donation of $70 you will cover the cost of our donuts. Donations given by others that morning will go to support various church ministries. Your sponsorship will be recognized by a sign on the hospitality table. Call the office, 229-8108, for more information or to get the remaining spots.

BELL CHOIR OPENINGS
There are openings in the Glory Ringers and Spirit Ringers bell choirs that practice at 5:30 and 6:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Kathy Ford, and the Rhapsody Ringers bell choir that practices at 7:30pm on Wednesdays under the direction of Janie Wilson. Bell choirs play in worship once a month. Bell ringing is good mental and physical exercise. Older people are learning to ring to keep their minds active and because it is a sociable hobby that allows them to make new friends. Knowledge of bell ringing is preferable but not necessary - we will be happy to teach you. Just come along to a practice on Wednesday nights and you are welcome to watch us ringing. |

Greetings!
I know some of you have heard it several times now. However, to be sure everyone is included, I will repeat a little! The sermons thus far in Lent have been thematic, based on the traditional United Methodist membership vows of Prayers, Presence, Gifts, and Service. My aim should be apparent because it has been stated very directly. I hope you have heard new possibilities and meanings in these words. We have been called to a time of self-examination in the spirit of the Lenten season. I have asked you to consider the nature of these vows based on your understanding of the church, and hopefully to conclude that these are sacred vows. This weekend Rev. Karen Taylor will conclude the sermon series. The last session of the United Methodist General Conference changed our traditional vows by adding one new word to them. We will, from now on, pledge ourselves to be witnesses for Jesus Christ. Thus, it becomes Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness. In one sense, this is a very obvious addition. When we live out the other vows, witnessing is something which seems to naturally grow out of that life. But in another, perhaps profound, way, this is a needed addition to our understanding of Christian discipleship. Without witnesses the Gospel does not spread. And, we witness in a variety of ways. One of them is verbal. Words are certainly not the only way we witness. Words may not even be the best way. But it is important for us to have words to express our experience of the grace of God in Jesus Christ. The words may be very simple. It may not require many of them. But each of us needs to share the words which witness to our experience of God's presence and grace in our lives. Your simple, heartfelt, witness may be the tool God uses to open the door for someone to a life-changing experience of God's grace. We all have multiple opportunities to witness. And, I know many of you already assume that sharing God's love is your mission. This weekend, as Rev. Karen preaches on the theme of "Witness," we will have the opportunity to renew our vows with the new addition. The aim is the same as it has been all along. That is, to encounter new meanings and possibilities. And, we enter into a Lenten spirit of self-examination. And finally, we answer the question, "Are these sacred vows?" Of course our Lenten journey continues, even after this sermon series has concluded. Palm Sunday is April 5. Holy Week, with worship services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and Stations of the Cross on Friday from noon to 6:30pm, follows. The Saturday evening before Easter we will join in the Easter Vigil. On April 12, Easter Day, we will joyously celebrate the Resurrection. Let us make this journey together. Grace and Peace be with you, Steve Campbell

EZRA PROJECT 2009
The United Methodist Men would, once again, like to invite the entire Church family to be involved in a unique worship experience one week during Lent. The name for this undertaking comes from Ezra, the scribe, and the public reading of the Law during the rebuilding of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's time. Beginning at the end of the Sunday services on March 29 and ending on Saturday, April 4, at the beginning of the Saturday evening service, we will be sponsoring a public reading of the entire Bible in the sanctuary. We invite everyone to come join us as we prepare for Holy Week. We are asking people to sign up to read aloud for 30-minute time slots, which are available from 6:00am to 11:00pm. When you sign up, you will receive additional instructions for the actual reading. We realize that this might sound like a new or unusual idea; but even so, as Methodists, we believe that reading the Bible is one of the "means of grace" by which God makes his presence real in our lives. So let us join together during this time of preparation and lift up his Word together. Keep an eye out in the narthex between services for a sign-up table or call the Church office at 229-8108 to reserve a time to read. | |
