Academic Success Partner of the Month
step logo
This month we highlight The S.T.E.P. Group in Tarzana.  While traditional schools may work well for many students, parents sometimes need to explore alternative educational settings. The S.T.E.P Group experts are trained both clinically and educationally in student placement services for struggling teens.  The S.T.E.P. Group specializes in offering educational placement and testing for struggling teens and students with special academic, emotional and/or behavioral needs. Their team of licensed psychologists is dedicated to helping parents find the best educational and emotional solution for their son or daughter in search of student placement services. An individualized plan for each family includes matching students with schools and providing educational planning, guidance and ongoing support.

Finding the Right Coach with

Greetings!

It's time to head back to school! Bittersweet - yes. Summer is a wonderful time for recreation and enrichment, and we hope that you participated in all the delights that these months can bring, and are feeling rested and rejuvenated.

Exciting new beginnings also mark this changing of the season. Getting off to a strong start and making a good impression with teachers is critical. Students who are organized and produce quality work right out of the gate have a real advantage.

Accordingly, Academic Success wants to support students in putting their best foot forward with new teachers and keeping up with the challenges that the upcoming school year will present.

What College Major is Most in Demand?       It All Adds Up with Statistics

stat girlIn the 1980s, engineering majors were in the highest demand.  In the 90s, everyone was clamoring to get their finance degree.  So what degree will provide the best job prospects for the new economy?  The answer: Statistics.

As the New York Times recently reported, our new, digitized world has created mountains of data in a variety of arenas.  Consequently, there is a great demand for people who can analyze data and create something useful out of it.  Statisticians are being called on for their analysis of cancer stats (looking for patterns in gene sequences) that may result in cutting health care costs and making manufacturing plants operate more efficiently.  Even Netflix is offering a $1 million reward for the statistician who can improve the company's movie recommendation system.

While Benjamin in The Graduate was advised that "plastics" are the future, today the future may be in statistics.

Study Tips

Study Tip #1 - Let Students Pick Out Their own School Supplies

826 logoNot all protractors are created equal, at least not to many students.  While acquiring the necessary school supplies may appear to be another errand that falls upon the shoulders of parents, we believe it is a task best left to the individual student. The choice of pencil bag, backpack and planning folder is a personal statement.  Accompanying your child to the store might be in order, but the actual selection of various supplies can be both an empowering and a rewarding activity for the student.

At Academic Success, we think the most important tool for achievement is the daily planner, and students are more likely to use it if they like its style, size and presentation. The planner is the place where students write their assignments every day, giving students a plan of attack once they begin their work, and acts as a guide to better overall study habits.

Study Tip #2-  Create an Organized Study Area at Home

At school, students have their locker. At home, students have their room or maybe the use of a family office. An effective way to begin the year is with a designated area, organized and maintained by the student. Cleaning out all the drawers, organizing the remaining objects, creating a file for important papers, and finding a place where all school books will "live" while at home are important steps in setting up a system for keeping overwhelming clutter at bay.

While your child may need some help creating their ideal at-home study spot, it is important that they feel they have created their office for themselves. Keeping their space clean and organized throughout the year should become part of their nightly routine.

Coach Profile

Meet Jason Lopez
Coach Profile of the Month

826 logo Because Jason is finishing his Ph.D. in Philosophy, it should be no surprise that he most values the Socratic method of helping students learn.  This method uses acute questioning to encourage students to think critically and carefully about their work.  Jason believes that coaching, as with teaching in general, is a matter of helping students to stand on their own strengths.  Jason has skills in a variety of subjects, but specializes in the humanities and is particularly interested in improving his students' writing abilities. His dissertation is on the topic of self-deception, something he applies in his every day life.  Although Jason loves to cook and is a self-described foodie, he has not deceived himself into thinking he is ready for Top Chef.  Similarly, as a third generation Dodger fan, Jason is concerned that the Dodgers may have deceived themselves into believing that they have enough starting pitching to survive the stretch run.
