FESTIVAL EXPRESS
Danko_Joplin_FestivalExpress
Rick Danko & Janis Joplin  on the "Festival Express"

During the early Summer of 1970 The Grateful Dead, The Band, Janis Joplin, Stevie Winwood's Traffic, Delaney & Bonnie, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Mountain, Buddy Guy and several other top rock bands boarded a train that transported them across Canada, playing a series of legendary concerts along the way.

A documentary of this amazing musical event was released in 2003 utilizing approximately 5 hours of the footage shot during the tour. Historic Films, in association with Gavin Poolman, the son of the Festival's original producer, and John Trapman now offer over 120 hours of footage shot at the original event including hours of unseen performances by all of the artists.
A special highlight is Janis Joplin performing her classic "Me and My Bobby McGee" while accompanying herself on the acoustic guitar. This is the only known footage of Janis performing this song AND the only footage of Janis playing the guitar.

The footage has been digitized and is currently being logged and posted for research screening on the Historic Films website.

Our Monthly Showcase of Historic Films Collections, hand-picked by our researchers...

PATHE NEWS, INC. LIBRARY

PATHE

In 1895 Charles Pathe began his quest to document the historical events of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1914, Pathe was producing the first-ever weekly newsreel.

HISTORIC FILMS exclusively represents  AMERICAN PATHE ( Pathe News, Inc.)  which includes highlights from the long running newsreel and the following  derivative Pathe produced series.

THE ROBERT YOUNGSON SHORTS

These shorts produced in the 1950s contain footage taken from  earlier newsreels. They document crazy inventions, daredevils and just plain wacky archival footage. These amusing, entertaining films continue to prove popular among producers for their "quick-read" visuals.

SNADER TELESCRIPTIONS

Contains over 1200 diverse musical performances shot between 1949-1954.  From Pop to Country to Blues to Jazz, this collection has it all.   Among the many legendary performers are;  Peggy Lee,  Mel Torme, Nat King Cole, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Merle Travis, Teresa Brewer and Gail Storm. HISTORIC FILMS currently holds the original 35mm negative on these performances.

SHOWTIME AT THE APOLLO

Rare early footage shot at the legendary Apollo Theater documenting the great black artists of the day, including BIg Joe Turner, Amos Milburn, The Larks, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.

PATHE EDUCATIONAL FILM SERIES

A journalistic approach to historical newsreel footage, similar in structure to today's "60 Minutes" series, this collection includes rare footage of historical events from 1895-1960. Other collections included are the Frank Fontaine Show and the Captain Edward Grief series.

MILESTONES OF THE CENTURY

Consists of over 25 short films that focus on the most famous and infamous people and events of the first half of the 20th century.

MEN OF DESTINY

Contains over 250 short films that focus on some of the most iconic and important politicians, celebrities, and sports figures of the first half of the 20th century
