Because of You...A Grand Slam
Anquinesha "Nesha" King Over the past few months, we've been telling you about the great accomplishments of one our girls living at the Group Home.  Today, we want to introduce you, so you can celebrate her successes.

Anquinesha, or "Nesha" as we call her, had her own Grand Slam last week.  She turned 18, graduated from high school with honors, graduated from the Group Home, and returned home to live with her family.  The last part is just for the summer, though.  Nesha heads this fall to Prairie View A&M University on scholarship to study forensic science!

You gave Nesha a home.  Because of you, she is achieving her goals and realizing her dreams.  On her behalf, thank you!

Education lost on foster kids

Op-Ed by Texas Supreme Court Justice Harriet O'Neill

"For two years, a special commission has been at work to transform the fragmented approach that Texas - and most other states - has employed in court supervision of children who are placed in foster care because they have been abused or neglected.

The commission...has made great progress in bringing together people from all corners of the child-protection field...[except] education."

"Mancession" hit women hard
By Jocelyn Noveck, The Associated Press

During most of the recession, "the job losses were overwhelmingly male", but the trend has reversed. In the 2001 recession, "women accounted for 15% of job losses. Today, it's one-third...Women are losing more jobs, yet families are more dependent on their earnings."

Seeking Summer Fun
Summer vacation help For girls living at the Group Home, the next few months will be filled with summer school and jobs and trips to museums and Six Flags.  What the girls look forward to most is summer vacation - a handful of days at a cool location to wind up the summer.  Last year, the girls stayed at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and trekked through Dinosaur Valley.

This summer, the girls hope to go to the Texas Hill Country and stay at a ranch resort.  Lots of activities abound at this resort - swimming, catch-and-release fishing, petting zoo, horseshoes, volleyball & badminton, canoeing, and nature walks.  The Guadalupe River and Ingram Lake & Dam are also nearby.

This 5-day, 4-night excursion is the girls' chance to have a true "family" vacation.  An experience new to some of them.

The cost for the trip totals $2,500, but the previous underwriter is no longer able to help.  If you would like to help the girls have their summer getaway, please donate online or by mail (designate to "summer trip") or contact Rebecca at 214.520.6268.

Check out highlights from last year's trip in the new Spring Newsletter.

THE EVENT Photos

No yellow brick road here.  Guests entered THE EVENT on a red carpet after getting their snapshot by the "invited" paparazzi.

Follow the red carpet to see the magic that raised over $80,000 for our girls & young women at THE EVENT benefiting Our Friends Place.

As the girls and young women living at Our Friends Place strive towards a better life, you are with them each and every step.  Thank you!
