Breaking the Cycle: Alissa
Most daughters dread the day they start to turn into their mothers with a laugh or exaggerated eye-roll. But that day wasn't so funny for Alissa.
For years, Alissa had witnessed her father physically and verbally abuse her mother. Now her boyfriend's remarks, what once seemed harmless teasing, were now more angry and hateful. Alissa was a high school drop-out and making only minimum wage with nothing to her name - she had no where to go if she moved out. She confided in a girl one day at work. Little did she know that co-worker would have the answer. She was a "graduate" of the TLC (transitional living center) and referred Alissa to Our Friends Place.
Alissa moved into the TLC late last summer and received her GED. She's now enrolled in community college part-time, working full-time and saving money so she can be independent.
