Houston Association of Black Psychologists stand with Black Firefighters against Racism By Jesse Muhammad

Houston, Texas---Patience is wearing thin with Mayor Bill White and The United States Department of Justice in Washington may be the next stop for the Houston Black Firefighters Association (HBFFA), who have garnered local and national support in their demand for a strong" zero tolerance" policy for racism and all of other forms of discrimination in the department. "This is a serious issue", said Otis Jordan, who is president of the HBFFA. "The Houston Fire Department is on auto-pilot and out of control. It is a shame after so many years, it is still the same." The HBFFA has launched a city-wide letter writing campaign directed at Mayor White, whom they feel has yet to address the issues properly. "Next stop DC!", said Mr. .Jordan. After six months, White Houston Fire Capt. Keith Smith apologized publicly for keeping a rope tied in the form of a hangman's noose in his locker which was discovered by a Black firefighter earlier this year. But he also insisted that he did not know that the noose was a symbol of hate. This angered many residents and caused the HBFFA not to accept his apology. The chant of "zero tolerance" by hundreds of protesters resonated throughout the streets of downtown Houston as Deric Muhammad and Mr. Jordan led a rally to demand stronger action by Mayor White. Organizers of the rally are also calling on the firing of Mr. Smith. "We did not appreciate his (Mr. Smith) apology because it was attached to an excuse", said Mr. Muhammad.
The July 28 rally started with a press conference at the Old Hanging Tree, located three blocks from City Hall. They then marched down Bagby street with signs in the 100 degree heat. Along with several other speakers Ebony Muhammad spoke on behalf of the Houston chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists. The group also proposed that in-depth sensitivity training be conducted along with a stricter policy of dealing with racist and sexist acts, and "counseling for the both the victimizers and victims of such acts support by the HFD". "The Association of Black Psychologists takes the stand that no action gives the appearance supporting these kind of acts", said Ebony Muhammad. "It is our contention that the city of Houston takes swift action to handle these issues in a clear, direct and appropriate manner that will benefit all individuals in working a harmonious work environment. God's Grace Part II
By Regina Kelly, Author
One weekend we decided to travel to visit my family. He dropped me off and went with his friends. My mother fell to her knees as soon as she saw me. She cried hysterically and begged me to stay. I tried to reassure her that everything was fine, but she knew better because she went through the same thing when I was younger. At the end of the day we said our good-byes, and the children and I were on our way home with the "love of my life". For some reason we stopped at a corner store. I made sure not to speak or look at anyone, because I didn't want to set him off. It's two o'clock in the morning, and I just wanted to get home to my bed. He sent me in the store to get him a sandwich a coke. I hurried to get it and got back in the car. We were on our way home with no problems. Suddenly with a coke bottle in his hand, I got the hardest slap across my face.

Ask Ms. Mavis Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, CART
Q: For those who are in substance abuse recovery, what are the chances of a relapse and what actually determines whether or not that will occur?
K.M. ~Tampa, FL
A: Relapse is the return to a behavior that has resulted in negative consequences in ones past, so it can certainly be applied to many things besides drugs and alcohol. One of the most common causes of relapse is the failure to apply coping skills. People become too relaxed and complacent in their recovery and stop practicing the day-to-day activities that have helped them to stay sober; such as meditation and prayer, attending support group meetings, regular communication with other people in recovery and daily self-examination. When a life-changing or devastating event catches them off guard, they choose to respond to it by using drugs and alcohol.
It is my belief that some people relapse because they are simply too lazy to make a different choice when faced with challenges. Because no matter what happens, we choose how we respond to situations, and returning to any behavior after we have stopped, is a choice. The choice not to relapse is not always an easy one to make, especially when events create emotions, and many people have never learned to deal with those feelings in a healthy or positive way. They are taught some new life skills in treatment, but once they are back in the mainstream of life they often neglect to apply them.
Another cause of relapse is when a person chooses to return to old people, places and things that were associated with their drug and alcohol use. This almost always results in relapse which is why it is strongly discouraged by all addiction professionals and treatment programs. However, there are times when those old things are a permanent part of an individual's environment, as is the case with most adolescents, and they are unable to separate themselves from it, so relapse is inevitable.
The most important thing one should know about relapse is that it is not an event, it is a process. Relapse begins in one's thinking and occurs long before a person actually picks up a drug or drink. So, if a recovering addict will learn to pay close attention to their thinking, it can be avoided. Maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle requires change, and change for most of us is uncomfortable and hard. But when a person gets sick and tired of living a useless and unproductive life, they usually become willing to change. Whatever the circumstances surrounding a relapse, the bottom line is, it is a choice. At the end of the day, that is really the only explanation that matters. The best thing a recovering person can do is to let someone know when the relapse process begins, and then they give themselves a fighting chance.
Peace & Blessings,
Ms. Mavis |
Blessings everyone,
For those of you who don't remember me, my name is Regina Kelly. I am the 32yr old woman who inspired the movie 'American Violet'. I would like to share another personal story with you all hoping that it encourages someone with their own personal battle today. Imagine this: eighteen, with two daughters with two different fathers, and single. Indeed this is a hard situation, but not impossible. I dropped out of school at seventeen to care for my children, in which one was born with cerebral palsy. Initially the doctors told me she wouldn't live to be two, however she is now fifteen. I left school and committed my life to my girls in every way. I was working in a nursing home and living in a three-bedroom apartment. In my eyes our life was great. At this point I had already been on my own since I was fifteen, and I was determined to give my babies a better life than I had as a child growing up.

Celebrating Our Independence

A Brief History on the Origin of The Nation of Islam in America A Nation of Peace & Beauty
On July the Fourth, the day of America's Independence celebration, He announced the beginning of His mission which was to restore and to resurrect His lost and found people, who were identified as the original members of the Tribe of Shabazz from the Lost Nation of Asia. The lost people of the original nation of African descent, were captured, exploited, and dehumanized to serve as servitude slaves of America for over three centuries. His mission was to teach the downtrodden and defenseless Black people a thorough Knowledge of God and of themselves, and to put them on the road to Self-Independence with a superior culture and higher civilization than they had previously experienced. He taught us the ways of love and peace, of truth and beauty. We are being led into the path of a new spiritual culture and civilization of complete harmony and peace, one of refinement in the pursuit of happiness and eternal joy in the Supreme Knowledge of God and the Science of everything in life.

The Origin of Hurt2Healing
By Bro. Jesse Muhammad- Final Call News Staff Writer , Motivational Speaker, and Artist
HOUSTON (FinalCall.com) - Earlier this year, an article in the popular VIBE magazine asked the question, "What happened to the Millions More Movement?" "The Millions More Movement is alive and well in the city of Houston," said Millions More Movement National Co-Convener Dr. Ben Chavis. Those sentiments were echoed at a Father's Day press conference here, with a surprising announcement. Pastor Kirbyjohn Caldwell, a prominent pastor of mega-church Windsor Village United Methodist Church, had offered his church's facility and agreed to partner with the Millions More Movement Ministry of Justice in its July 1, 2006 March Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (organized by men, for women). The march, originally scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. from downtown Houston, is themed "From Hurt to Healing, Protecting the Essence of Our Sisters." Supporters include Essence magazine Editorial Director Susan Taylor, the Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) of New York, Million Woman's March Organizing Committee of Philadelphia, Congressman Al Green, Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson and a host of others.

With the theme "From Hurt to Healing: Protecting the Essence of Our Sisters," the Planning and Execution Committee of the Ministry of Justice designed a rally and march unprecedented in the city. How so? Because it was organized chiefly by men for women, who were given an opportunity to express their hurt and the means by which the healing could begin. The rally's opening remarks were delivered by lead organizer Deric Muhammad, who also serves as the Local Ministry of Justice spokesman, which were followed by the pouring of libations by Kofi Taharka of the National Black United Front. Anxious to turn the program over to the Sisters, Bro. Deric then quickly introduced key male leaders in attendance who all came forth to share brief words of support. "Any one who does not love Black women does not love himself," stressed Congressman Al Green (TX-9), who was instrumental in having a congressional bill passed last year to fight domestic violence. Councilmember Jarvis Johnson (District B) called on all men to start taking charge. "We must patrol ourselves and take a stronger stand for our women." As he spoke, others stood with blown-up composite sketches of a sexual predator that he and others are working to get off of the streets.
