March in Lake City
Feeling a little sad that winter is winding down yet looking forward to summer fun? Head to Lake City for your spring break and enjoy BOTH types of fun. Because of our easy access to high mountain playgrounds as well as our balmy days, you can do everything from snowshoe to fly fish in the same vacation! Take a look at what fun awaits you:
Winter Fun
- Snowshoe Tours: Experience the serene beauty of winter by taking a guided snowshoeing tour. The Sportsman offers tours that include a guide who can tell you all about the natural beauties, as well as carry your gear and serve you lunch.
- Sledding: Just want to speed down a hill on an old-fashioned sled or snow tube? Stop by The Sportsman to rent or buy a sled or snow tuble. Then find a hill and slide!
- Ice Fishing: Lake San Cristobal still has enough ice to drive on it with a half-ton truck. Grab some fishing gear at The Sportsman, dig a hole, and try your hand at the age-old art of ice fishing.
- Snowmobiling: Enjoy a day on the large, groomed snow fields. Rent a snowmobile or take a guided tour. Talk with the folks at Lake City Auto for details.
- Ice Climbing: The Lake City Ice Park is still open and going strong. Take your turn climbing the ice flows for a fun and challenging day.
- Downhill Skiing: The Lake City Ski hill is always fun and inexpensive too. And if you want to enjoy a larger hill, take the short drive to Crested Butte for a full day of Colorado powder.
Unqiue Spring Activities
- Fly Fishing: There's enough open water to get into the Lake Fork of the Gunnison and throw a few nymphs. This is the time of year when we typically get into the "big guys" as they awake from their winter sleep very, very hungry. Stop by the store for some hints and tips and a few flies, or take one of our guided trips.
- Scenic Drive: Take a drvie from Lake City to Creede and enjoy the view. The highway is always well maintained, and you'll see some winter landscapes that only the lucky few ever enjoy.

Hinsdale Ski Team Members at Tellurdide Races
Lake City News
Everyone always asks us what we do in the winter, and frankly we're so busy with local activities, family fun, and business preparations that winter speeds by even faster than summer! Take for instance this past February. Lake Citeans hosted three major annual events, including the Ice Fishing Derby, Ice Climbing Festival, and Balloon Festival. All of these events involve many of our townfolk, as we do all of the preparation and a heck of a lot of the participation! Fortunately, all events went off without a hitch and earned some very needed extra cash for local organizations, such as the Hinsdale County Search & Rescue team and Lake City Area Recreation Department.
Now as we slide into March, we're looking forward to the last month of competitive skiing. Our local Hinsdale County Ski team has gone to five nationally rated ski races and two fun races (one hosted at our Lake City Ski Hill). Our youth team is pretty inexperienced, but they had some great results competing against the larger ski resorts. More importantly, they learned some invaluable lessons and had lots of fun! For more information about the team, see http://www.hinsdaleskiteam.com/
Wondering what to do for spring break? You might want to head up to our beautiful mountains and experience this unique time of year. You can have fun with winter activities, such as downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Or if you prefer, get into the water and fly fish. We've got enough open water where throwing a nymph or two will bring the big fish up and out.
If you need help or advice about what to do in Lake City for spring break, call us at 970-944-2526 or email us at info@lakecitysportsman.com. We'll give you some good ideas and hints about making your break a fun one. And don't forget, this is the time of year where The Sportsman offers huge discounts on lots of outdoor gear and clothes! |
Advice from Our Staff
We help people with all types of issues, from anglers asking fly fishing questions to visitors wanting to know where to find a good shower. Send us your questions, and we'll post some of them so we that we can share the knowledge.
Question: How do you decide where to go fishing or take a guide trip?We make a joint decision with the angler on where to go. The final decision depends on many factors that include everything from the weather to the needs and wants of the angler.
Some anglers desire a backcountry experience and don't mind a rigorous hike or drop into a canyon or isolated area. Others are simply not able to make that type of a trip, and desire a more leisurely day, perhaps even fishing right off a highway. We're fortunate because we have so much wonderful water in Lake City, we can fish within 2 blocks from the store or an hour away. Generally, we're fishing within 20 minutes of leaving the store. It's rare for us to take long to get anglers on the water unless they have a specific goal of fishing someplace farther from Lake City, like on the Cochetopa or the Gunnison River.
Other anglers have specific goals in terms of the type of fish they want, or quantity and size. That influences where we would fish. Also, we have to consider the time of year and the hatches. During ice-out in March and April, we're fishing the large streams and the Lake Fork, where the big trout are hungry and the chances of getting into the large hogs are excellent. As run-off starts, say in May, we're moving up to the smaller streams where the water isn't as high and dangerous. Once run-off is over, generally by mid-June, our water selection is wide open and we can hit large waters on the Lake Fork and Gunnison or move into the high county on Henson and other high streams. Fortunately, we have a lot of water to choose from.
