How Do You Safely Approach a Dog?

Whenever we see a cute pup walking our way, our instinct is to immediately go toward it and shower it with love and affection.

That's not the best strategy.

Dogs have certain boundaries just like people do, and we need to respect those boundaries by approaching dogs in the appropriate way. Not only that, but injuries are much more likely to occur if you engage with a dog in the wrong way.

So let's respect dogs and protect ourselves! Here are some simple guidelines to consider when approaching a furry friend:
  1. When greeting any dog, always ask the pet parent first if it is ok. If it is, stand still and let the dog approach you first. This will help build rapport at a pace that is comfortable for the dog.
  2. When a dog approaches, stand sideways to the dog, and hold your relaxed closed hand next to you. Don't look right at the dog. This allows the dog to choose the interactions that he/she feels safe with. Remember, not every dog wants to be petted or greeted.
  3. Do not stand over the dog looking down at it. While standing or squatting near the dog, gently rub the chest slowly. Dogs really don't enjoy being patted on top of the head or back.

Off-leash dogs from a guide dog user's perspective:
BREMERTON, WASHINGTON - Reader submitted

I am a visually impaired person who travels with a guide dog.

My dog has given me the freedom of mobility that the sighted population enjoys.

Unfortunately, this cherished freedom is being threatened by people who let their dogs run loose.

Dogs off leash in public areas present not only a nuisance but threaten my dog's and my safety by preventing my dog from competently performing her job of guiding me in my travels.

Letting dogs run free, except in designated off-leash areas, is not being considerate of other people, dogs on leash, and service dogs. It also is not safe for the loose dog.

Please be a responsible dog owner by respecting other people and their dogs, the safety of your dog, and people with guide dogs and service dogs by keeping your dog contained on your property or on a leash.

Tai Chi Classes at Guide Dogs of the Desert
Tai Chi

We have a wonderful opportunity to learn Tai Chi from world renowned instructor Noel Pittman who is the director of the Tai Chi Education and Resource Institute. He will be coming to the school every Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30pm to teach Tai Chi classes. The cost for each class is only $8.00.

 What is Tai Chi Chuan:
Tai Chi Chan is the slow moving and graceful exercise practiced for over 1000 years in China. Tai Chi practice does not require expensive equipment, special
clothing or a large amount of space. This twenty-minute routine performed twice daily provides many benefits including: increased strength and stamina, improved cardiovascular and immune system function, a tonic for all organ and glandular systems greatly improved balance, flexibility and coordination. The National Institute on the Aged.

(NIA) sponsored one of the first medical studies involving Tai Chi in a special frailty reduction program. Steven L. Wolf, Ph.D., and colleagues at the Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Ga., found that older people taking part in a 15-week Tai Chi program reduced their risk of falling by 47.5 percent. Numerous studies have also found low-cost, low-tech Tai Chi classes to be a superior intervention for the reduction falls in seniors. Palm Springs Tai Chi Education and Research Center.
