New scheme helps Unemployed Moroccan

Graduates train as English Teachers!

25 young Moroccan BA and MA graduates will be subsided during July 2012 to an intensive three weeks Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) in Fez.

This new scheme, launched by the British Council in partnershipwith the Moroccan Association of Friends of English (MAFE) and the American Language Centre in Fez, will help provide unemployed graduates with a gateway into an exciting and dynamic teaching career within the private sector. Especially that private schools don't accept to employ the graduates with no foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom.

Nick Cherkas, English Projects Manager for the British Council in Morocco, said "This course is a unique opportunity for young English teachers in Morocco to gain the practical skills needed to start their career. We hope that this course will be the first of many to teachers in a similar situation all over Morocco.

Wonder Villains Band in Marrakesh

For the first time in Morocco the British Pop band " Wonder Villains" from Derry, Ireland, performed in Marrakech on the night of the 30th June .

The Moroccan public especially young Moroccan musicians and artists had also the chance to meet Eimear, Ryan, Ceilin and Kieran during a round table to discuss the life as  young professional musician in today's competitive music industry.

"Wonder Villains, the definitive makers of new Northern Ireland pop and more than up for it "are refreshingly, utterly without pretence or guile as they sing songs about stuff that genuinely excite them, such as Peter Petrelli from Heroes ("Oh Peter"), Gianfranco Zola ("Zola") and the film Space Jam(er, 'Space Jam')" states out AU Magazine.

This event goes along the British Council's aim to facilitate intercultural dialogue through artistic expression. Art is a powerful vehicle for people to communicate across and between cultures and this is an opportunity for young Moroccans to exchange experiences with their British counterparts as well as each other to gain ideas about how music can facilitate dialogue and a greater social inclusion.

Research in Humanities and Social Sciences!

Over one hundred Vice-President of Moroccan universities, Deans of Faculties of humanities and social sciences attended a seminar on "Research in Humanities and Social Sciences" organised by the British Council in Collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and University Ibn Zohr and which took place on 15-16 June 2012 at University Ibn Zohr Agadir.

Martin Rose, Director of British Council Morocco explains the importance of organising such an event in Morocco: "Social Science research is the bedrock of thinking about structure in contemporary society. Our universities have a pivotal role to play in ensuring that individual knowledge is furthered; questions and debate are developed and that critical and independent thought is used. These roles have been pivotal since the advent of the very first universities in the Arab and Western World"

Dr Craig Bardsely, Professor Paul Colloney, Professor Ismael Rafols and Pr Lesley Emerson talked about the experience of the UK and their participation created opportunities for sharing ideas and best practices with the Moroccan colleagues. One of the participants said "the sharing of experiences, both British and Moroccan, is enriching and empowering".

The conference not only gave the participants a chance to deepen relationships with key experts in the field but was also an opportunity to present real opportunities for effective collaboration with research councils such as Social and Economic Council in the UK and British Universities like Essex University and Queen University in Belfast..
