Newsletter June 2012

We're coming to the climax of the biggest and busiest year yet for Panathlon, with over 3,000 disabled young people competing in 50 different sporting events across the country. We've also trained over 200 Young Leaders as Panathlon Officials and are qualifying a further 100 coaches with various sporting body qualifications.

From Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Stadium

In this exciting sporting year, we are proud that Panathletes have competed at the birth place of the Paralympics - Stoke Mandeville and also on the new Olympic track in London.
Competitors at Stoke Mandeville

Panathlon held its first ever competition at Stoke Mandeville in partnership with the EFDS and DSE. 150 competitors from 7 teams took part including four new areas; Beds, Bucks, Berks and the Chilterns. Read the full story here. Also competing were 3 Development squads from London who came to the historic venue. See the Gallery of pics here. Gold Challenge

Thanks to the British Paralympic Trust for helping to fund this event. So from the venue of inspiration for the first Paralympics - right up to date to London 2012, Panathlon had its first "race" in the new Olympic Stadium in April. Thanks to our friends at Gold Challenge and the Mayor of London, Panathlon is proud that we were the first disability race on the new Olympic track. Mayor of London Photo's can be seen here and a short video of the day is worth a watch here.

London Stansted celebrates 100 days to go to Paralympics

Stansted
As reported in the last edition, London Stansted Airport have chosen Panathlon as their first
ever Charity of the Year. Building upon this new relationship, Panathlon have trained 7 of their staff as sports officials, who then officiated at the South Essex Semi-Final. We held a Mini-Panathlon Challenge at the Airport terminal on 18th May for local schools. Three sports were played and officiated by London Stansted staff and local Team GB athlete Faith Pitman helped out. The retailers at the airport also held collections and a fabulous 331 was raised for Panathlon.

Panathlon Swims!

Exciting News - Panathlon has carried out its very own "test" event with our friends at ASA Aquatics. A new format is being tested for "non-classified" swimmers in order to tempt the less able competitors into the water! Clissold Pool in Hackney, a stones throw from the Olympic Park, hosted our first "wet" competition involving local Panathlon teams with Haringey winning the first ever competition. We will develop this format over the coming months so watch this space! Pics from the day here.

Fundraising Ball

We held our first ever Fundraising Ball in May at the London Hilton Stansted and raised an estimated 15,000 which is to be split between both Panathlon and the Hilton in the Community Foundation. We were joined by past and present members of Team GB Paralympic Squad, including Giles Long, Danny Crates, Noel Thatcher, Dan Bentley, Liz Johnson, Helen Turner and Louise Sugden. A huge thanks to all those who bought tickets, supplied raffle and auction items or made donations - please click here for more information.

Please put this date in your diaries for next year's Ball Saturday May 11th 2013!

Around the World
in a Day

Stansted Airport was once again the venue for the "Around the World in a Day" fundraising event for Hilton in the Community Foundation on May 20th. All funds raised by running, walking, swimming, rowing or cycling are to be donated by Hilton London Stansted to the local Panathlon schools in Essex. A week of activity took place before the day including sponsored walks

by Southview and Marketfield Schools, local Cricket and Running clubs clocking up the miles, and Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson swimming some 36km towards the total. Thanks to all those that took part and helped us clock up a staggering 2,641km!

Some of our Panathlon Officials.
One of the great developments this year has been Panathlon utilising over 200 Young Leaders in different parts of the country. We have ran 14 Young Officials courses 'qualifying' Young Leaders, who then have officiated at 20 competitions this year. This has been a great experience for all involved and we will look to develop this work more next year. See some thoughts from our Young Leaders by reading their Blogs. Additionally we have qualified 100 sports coaches through Governing Body Accredited Sports Awards. More information from [email protected] Jack Petchey Logo sky

Thanks to the Jack Petchey Foundation for partnering us on this work.
