Welcome to the latest news from around the country where so far this year, 50 Panathlon competitions have taken place for thousands of young disabled people.

Due to the investment from the Mayors Sports Legacy Plan for London, there has been a huge expansion in the number of multi-sports competitions, with nearly 1,000 young disabled people taking part across 28 London Boroughs in 2010. Panathlon organised qualifying rounds in each County Sports Partnership area in January & February and then the qualifiers played off in 5 area Finals in March. Those winners who now go on to the All London Final are; Barking & Dagenham (East), Croydon (South), Harrow (West), Haringey (North) and Lambeth (Central). The Panathlon Football project in London goes from strength to strength, with around 500 young disabled footballers benefiting this year from coaching and competition and the new Powerchair project due to kick off shortly.  More details here if you click here.
   
Kent
In late April 227 disabled young Kent athletes competed across 12 school sport partnership areas. The Panathlon charity had previously invested over £20,000 in coaching and equipment across the county of Kent in preparation for these competitions. The Winners were Dartford, Mid Kent & Ashford and Herne Bay. Congratulations to all that took part.
Medal winnersThe winners of each sport (18 separate teams) now compete for their regional area (East, West & Central) in the Kent Final on May 26th at the Malling School. Essex
Further expansion in Essex means around 250 competitors have taken part in competitions this academic year, which culminated in two semi final Wheelchair athletecompetitions in April involving 8 school sport partnership areas. Day one at Braintree College saw Harlow and Southview (NW Essex) qualify for the Final. The second semi-final at Chelmsford resulted in Beacon Hill (Thurrock) and Oakview (W Essex) qualifying for the Final on July 1st. For more information on the Essex events please click here  Lakeside shopping centre have once again supported Panathlon and provided extra coaching for both the Chelmsford and Thurrock Teams. Plymouth 
plymouth rowingOver 100 disabled Panathletes took part in Plymouth on April 29th in the sports of tennis, rowing, boccia, football and table tennis. The students were from seven schools across the city. The students had a wide range of abilities, many wheelchair users, others with Learning difficulties but, all working together throughout the day. This was, a collaboration between the two partnerships and the Sports Development Unit and Marjons College. Many thanks to all who co-ordinated Panathlon in Plymouth ! Merseyside

Over 2 days in March, 187 disabled young people from all 6 Merseyside boroughs competed at the Greenbank Sports Academy in the primary and secondary Panathlon competitions. St. Helens triumphed in the Primary Panathlon and Knowsley won the secondary event. This included

20 children from mainstream education and 10 hearing impaired / deaf competitors and 2 students were talent spotted to become members of Knowsley wheelchair racing club. Thanks to Merseyside Sport for supporting Panathlon

ZurichSwindon joins in

New to the Panathlon family this year is Swindon, where Zurich Community Trust's grant of £3,000 has kicked off the Challenge. So far Panathlon has trained 34 young leaders, teachers and coaches and 4 schools are going to compete in the first Swindon Panathlon on May 19th. Around the worldHiltonFHilton Foundation supporting Panathlon

Help us raise funds for the Essex Panathlon by running, swimming, rowing or biking on June 6th at your local Hilton Hotel.  Every mile you contribute will help us and Hilton hotels aim of going "Around the World in a Day." Hilton Stansted have kindly nominated Panathlon as their recipient for funds this year and therefore we are encouraging everyone to get active on June 6th and add to the total "miles" ran/swum/biked etc. Every penny raised will help local disabled Panathletes with more equipment and coaching funds. Finals

So far this academic year around 10,000 active hours of training and competition has taken place in internal, local and regional competitions by several thousand young disabled Panathletes. The City/ County wide Finals coming up are -

The Jack Petchey Foundation has kindly supported the London and Essex Panathlon again this year and is supporting our "Outstanding Achievement Award", which aims to reward acts of individual exceptional performance, teamwork, fair play, leadership etc. Nominations are open for the prestigious award from teams in London and Essex and a reward of £500 coaching fund and a visit from a Paralympian to your school for the winning entry. 2010 Virgin London Marathon

Congratulations to Yolanda Edwards, Hillingdon Panathlon team Manager, who very kindly ran 26.2miles for the Panathlon charity in 4 hours, 40 mins in the London Marathon. This despite being injured and having to walk the last few miles. Yolanda has so far raised £661 for us and you can reward her achievements further by contributing here

Charity of
the Year
In 2010, Panathlon aims to invest back in to the community; £100,000 in sports coaching, £100,000 of disability sports equipment and £100,000 cost of delivering 50 multi-sports competitions. Therefore we need to raise over £300,000 this year to enable us to meet these targets ! Schools raise funds for charity
London schools are helping us to reach our fundraising targets in various ways. St. Annes in Merton raised £400 on their charity day, LB Havering held a sponsored trampoline event raising £181, Southfields Sports College raised £177 in a charity dance night and Swiss Cottage School in Camden have donated £100.  Thank you all for your contributions, every little bit helps in our target of raising £300,000. However much you raise locally, will get invested back directly in your local special schools.
