Since the last email newsletter, Panathlon Challenge competitions have taken place in London, Liverpool, Kent, Essex and Plymouth - involving over 2,000 young disabled people. |

London Panathlon
Six Panathlon events across each County Sports Partnership took place in March, with the winners of each event going through to the  London Final on June 25th. (For a full set of results, please click the results tab above) The first qualifiers to the London Final were Barking & Dagenham who won through on March 9th to their first Final. The second event was supported by Capital Radio Help a London Child, in the Central area with Wandsworth scoring a record total to qualify for the  Final. Central Boroughs were supported by Capital Radio Help a London Child in coaching sessions and preparation for their regional event. Waltham Forest then qualified from the North, Bromley from the South, Brent from the West and also Liko Team Newham from the East. As we reported previously, the borough of  Newham were funded by Liko (UK) Ltd, who paid for the creation of a specialist Panathlon club, to train and prepare their team. This paid dividends with Liko Team Newham also qualifying for the London Final on June 25th. |
Merseyside Panathlon
The Merseyside Panathlon for Primary students took place at the Greenbank Academy on March 4th, involving 100 children from all 6 local authorities, Halton, St.Helens, Knowlsey, Liverpool, Wirral and Sefton. Knotty Ash School also attended with hearing impaired/deaf children. The sports included Table Tennis, Football, Athletics and Boccia, with Halton Borough winning a tight competition. On hand to award medals and wish the competitors well was Shelley Woods, GB Paralympian. Shelley inspired competitors with her thoughts on winning medals for Team GB in Beijing this summer. The Secondary school Merseyside Panathlon took place on March 11th with another 100+ athletes taking part and Sefton Borough winning a close competition.

Plymouth Panathlon Over 100 competitors from 7 schools, took part in Plymouth's very own Panathlon on April 1st at Marjons College. Sports included tennis, boccia, football and athletics. Students had a range of abilities and were from both primary and secondary schools with SLD / EBD / MLD. The school sports partnership organised the events with the Panathlon charity providing medals and certificates for all Panathletes. Plymstock SSP also organises a mainstream Panathlon Challenge which involved almost 1,000 young people from 14 secondary schools. For more details please see www.plymstockssp.com

Essex Panathlon On April 23rd the tri-partnership of School Sports Partnerships in NW Essex, took place involving around 100 disabled young people. Braintree College hosted the event providing facilities and students to run the events with the Essex Competition Managers. Southview School just beat Lexden Springs to qualify for the County Wide Panathlon Final in Chelmsford on July 2nd. Well done to all those competing!! |

Kent Panathlon
  The Kent Panathlon Challenge, supported by BBC Children in Need and St. James's Place Foundation, took place on March 29th and 30th, involving around 200 young disabled athletes. 8 School Sports Partnerships co-ordinated teams and the four SSP's that have qualified for the Kent Final on July 1st are; Dartford, Maidstone, Mid Kent & Ashford and Sheppey. Congratulations to you all !! Many thanks also to our two host schools, Sittingbourne Community College and the Malling School who provided teams of "Young Leaders" who assisted with the running of the days competition. Panathlon Challenge warmly welcomes the "in-kind" support from Gildan for supplying over 2,500 Panathlon athletes with FREE t-shirts. Gildan is a world leader label for tee-shirts, sports shirts and fleecewear, and has for several years supplied Panathlon Challenge with its team tee-shirts via Bilko Clothing.
