Protocol # 50 (Excerpt from "The Protocol Book")
A myriad of things happen during a hygiene recall visit that require follow-up:
 The orthodontist needs to be called to answer an anxious parent as to when the case will be complete.- The oral surgeon needs a call to review how you would like to manage the palatally impacted bicuspid.
- Mrs. Smith, Johnnie's mother, needs a call to talk about six interproximal caries revealed on their, "not-so-great with a toothbrush" teenager.
You get the idea.
This protocol is one of the more impactful contributions outside of the perio co-therapy that hygienists provide. It puts the call for all follow-up calls that can be made by hygiene in their hands.
Rationale
Ain't nothing greater than leading a real team. A real team covers each other's backs. Putting hygiene in charge of these follow-ups accomplishes a number of things. - It gets stuff done. These calls and this type of information have a way of lingering when the onus falls solely on the doctor.
- It creates bonds between the hygiene department and your patients as well as other specialists in the community. It's not passing the buck. It's proactive. It gets the team involved.
- Most importantly, it's liberating. It enables the doctor to focus on the big picture. Something rather necessary for enduring success.
