Hygiene Patient Is 20 Minutes Late (Do You See Them Or Not?)
Protocol # 43 (Excerpt from "The Protocol Book")
It's an easier solution than you think. First of all, always try to run your business without conflict. Without confrontation. So when possible, still see them. When to see them:
- When the next patient has a personality that allows flexibility. Like a "socializer" (refer to Non-Manipulative Selling by Anthony Alessandra).
- When the next appointment is "easy." In the scope of a week, some hygiene appointments are easier than others. Maybe it's an hour for a patient with a maxillary denture. Or the same time for Mrs. Smith who flosses three times daily and owns her own mouth mirrors.
- When the next appointed patient has a history of lateness.
- When the 20-minute-late-patient has "easy" treatment to complete.
- When they are a high-valued patient that legitimately travels to see you.
- If the time after this appointment is lunch or end of the day.
When not to see them:
When they have a history of late appointments and would qualify as a not-so-desirable patient, as in:
- Long, outstanding balances
- Poor source of referrals
- Poor history of treatment acceptance
- A negative source of energy
Rationale
Now, before you sic the National Dental Hygiene Association on me, hear me out. In today's fierce market for quality patients, sometimes you have to bend. And, if tardiness is their only flaw, in my office - in my world - they'll get away with this to a point. Having said that, the ultimate decision will be left to the clinician. It will be his or her final call. It's my hope they'll be reasonably flexible but I will always honor their input - without an attitude!
