A New Tree!
You will notice that a new tree was planted over the spring break in front of the School. The graduating class of 2007 gave a tree to Lighthouse in honor of their teacher Sandy Mitchell. We thank our alumni and their families for this wonderful gift to our school. We will enjoy it for many years to come!

Julie Gifford
Lou Guarnaccia
Randy Hudson

You may have noticed some of the chairs gracing our hallways here at school.  Once all chairs are complete, they will be touring about town at galleries and other locations.  We will once again be selling $10 raffle tickets for a chance to win the chair of your choice.  Stay tuned for details!

At Lighthouse School, we honor the cycle of the seasons and celebrate the spirit of holidays, which serve to mark our path as we journey through each year.

In a very real sense, holidays can serve to connect us to the rhythm of the natural world and its ever-changing yet predictable course. Attending to and celebrating these signposts is one way in which we cultivate a child's awareness of the natural world and inspire his/her sense of connection, wonde
r and joy.

As multi-layered expressions of history and
culture, holidays can teach us about who we are while celebrating the invincible human spirit. They can build a sense of community even as they can inform us about our similarities and our differences.

Seasonal celebrations offer yet another opportunity in which to nurture a playful and curious exploration of the natural and cultural worlds which, in turn, serve to encourage and nourish the lifelong learner.

An Eventful Week Coming Up:

On Monday, April 27th, Lighthouse classes will tour the schooner ALABAMA, a 'Tall Ship' hailing from Martha's Vineyard. Captain Morgan Douglas and crew will conduct our tours.

Jennifer Gross from A Safe Place will be conducting workshops for Lighthouse classes in the last week of April. Small School and Kinderclass students will learn about '3 Kinds of Touch,' while Primary-P5 students will focus on the practice of respect and tolerance.

In response to requests from parents, Jennifer has offered to present information to parents regarding the '3 Kinds of Touch' program that she will be presenting to the Kinder and Small School classes. In this way, the information and language introduced in the workshop can be utilized at home. Small School and Kinderclass parents are invited to meet with Jennifer on Tuesday, April 28 from 2-2:30 in Lizbet's classroom. We can provide childcare for your Small Schoolers during that time but please call Stacy at 228-0427 to let us know.

Lighthouse students will be participating in the Junior Artists annual show at the Nantucket Artists' Association's Seward Johnson Gallery on Washington Street. An opening celebration will take place on Thursday, April 30 from 3-6 p.m. you can also visit the show over the weekend.

RICHARD LEWIS, founder/director of The Touchstone Center for Children will be travelling to Nantucket from New York City to explore ways to value and incorporate imagination, play, and art experiences in the home and the classroom. We hope you will join us for the free parent workshop this Thursday night or educator workshop on Saturday.  See below for more details.

Senora Patricia Harding is organizing our annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. Older students will be cooking tacos for an All School feast. You will find a 'menu' to fill out in your mailbox.

STORY TELLING FESTIVAL: FREE Parent WorkshopRichard Lewis
Through a Marble Brightly: Delights and Imaginings

Co-Hosted with the Nantucket Atheneum
Date: April 30, 7:00 PM at the Lighthouse School
"What is our play? What makes our playing, for our children and ourselves, such a marvel of untold possibilities? How might play be pivotal in how we learn - and how we imagine?" These are some of the questions Richard Lewis will explore with us as he engages us in playfully seeing the world, indeed the universe, in all its playful abundance - and the ways such abundance can be at the source of a child's desire to learn - and imaginatively deepen its learnings. Limit 30 attendees.
Call 508-228-0427 to register or for more information.

STORY TELLING FESTIVAL: Educator's Workshop

Secret Wisdom, Magic Days: A Workshop on the Imagination in Learning and Teaching
Co-Hosted with the Nantucket Atheneum

Dates: May 2, 9:30 a.m. - noon, at the Atheneum's Gallery
This workshop will bring together discussions and hand-on activities that amplify the importance of playful improvisation, conversation and questioning as a means of incorporating the arts, play, and the imagination into the core of schooling and education. In addition we will consider how and why using objects and images of the natural worlds in classroom settings can be a way of bringing children closer to their instinctive interaction with 'nature' and our lives within it.  Pre-registration required, $25 fee, limit 30 attendees.
Register for the Educator Workshop on the Nantucket Atheneum Web site by clicking here.
