We hope to see you Saturday.

At Lighthouse School, we leap wholeheartedly into the holiday season. Once we return from Thanksgiving break, classrooms are abuzz with color, yarn, paint, and assorted craft materials as children begin to craft projects for the season. Christmastime gives us the opportunity to delve into essential aspects of our curriculum, the education of the 'heart' and 'hand.'  In each child we strive to cultivate a sense of gratitude and generosity.  These lessons are housed in daily activities as well as being highlighted in projects throughout the school year.  One powerful lesson exists in our annual Yuletide Fair. While Lighthouse students contribute handmade wares to the fair themselves, they also see their teachers, parents, friends and relatives contributing their time, energies and talents to cooperatively create a wonderful community event on behalf of their school and for their Nantucket community.

While children are accustomed to making their Christmas lists of what they would like to receive, at school they are asked to list people they would like to give a gift to, and to go about creating those gifts for the people they love. We discussed the importance of Christmas at a recent All School Meeting. A Small School student said that the holiday was important 'because you get presents.' An Upper Primary Class student responded that it was the giving at Christmas that was important. He turned to the younger child and said, very matter-of-factly, "If no one is doing the giving, then you aren't getting!"

The excitement and energy that this season inspires finds joyful expression in the doing and making of things for others. Some of these projects can cause grousing on the part of the 'merry' elves whose patience and focus are called upon in good measure. However, the finished product and the eagerness to share these gifts more than makes up for the hard work.

Children yearn for opportunities to be 'big' and we, as parents and educators, need to make sure they are given ample and appropriate ways to practice taking responsibility, expressing gratitude, and doing for others. Children feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in creating their projects and learn to wrestle with tissue paper and tape as they 'wrap' their gifts. Very importantly, they can't wait to give these presents to the people they love! The working toward and the waiting to give are very significant aspects of this work. We can also call this 'perseverance' and 'anticipation.' These are two key ingredients in human experience that are in danger of evaporating in our technological age and that find clear and constructive application in school and in life.

Many of the projects throughout the school year -- including our end-of-year projects --  require time and patience to accomplish. While the 'make-it-and-take it' projects have some value and are instantly gratifying to children (and adults sometimes!), they do not teach the same lessons as those projects requiring thought, diligence and perseverance.

Through our holiday work, we kindle the spirit of hope, patience, and generosity within children, the warmth of which will fuel their future endeavors.

We invite you to join us for an upcoming Open House to learn more about the Lighthouse School curriculum and the application process for the coming year.  We have two Open House events in January: join us on January 8 at 4:30 pm or January 15 at 11 am.  Both events last for one hour and begin with a guided tour followed by a discussion of our unique curriculum using actual student work.  To learn more, visit our web site or call 508.228.0427.
