March 2011
Greetings!

Hello GLO Families and Happy March! The Groundhog saw his shadow and you know what that means....SPRING IS COMING!

We are rounding out our third session of Teacher switching during PM GLO. GLO Teachers have been switching classrooms to gain two different experiences; working with children in close-range age as well as grades farthest from their normal grade. It has given them the opportunity to see similarities and differences amongst the children's behavior, what age-appropriate activities consist of and how their maturity develops throughout the stages of development. They were also able to see where independence is developed and how it is fostered through GLO activities. Lastly is funny how the children act when they see their "usual Teacher" out on the yard during snack...you see them running up to the GLO Staff as if they have not seen them in years. It is really a cute experience to witness!

And the winner is.....

Ashley Blanco

As some of you know, our beloved Ashley resigned from her PM Program position to a new position in the community. She will continue to work during the AM Program to facilitate GLO Academy Majors. She will be faced with many challenges and highlights that will further her experiences working with youth and their families. I know that her time spent here has paved a pathway for success in her future positions. For now, Stefanie will fill in until a new teacher is hired!

Here is a small paragraph from Ashley.

As you may or may not know, my last day of leading 1st Grade was February 14. I will be working as a full-time Case Manager in Hunter's Point, serving children and youth ages ten- to eighteen-years-old. I was able to celebrate my time with the 1st Graders by eating cake and cookies with the children. I am so grateful to have worked with your children and acquainted myself with all of you.

Ashley

SHAPE UP SF

Shape Up SF started February 28, 2011. Both GLO AM and PM Program participants will be involved in this 10 week challenge to walk/exercise 1,016 miles; the equivalent of the California Coast. Children in grades #rd, 4th and 5th have the opportunity to provide their Teachers with a valid email address so that they can log their miles earned on the weekend. THANK YOU TO SHIRLEY for making a map of California for every grade. At pick up time, check how far the class has walked. If you would like some more information, visit...

*** NEW PROGRAM COMPONENT***

(experimental phase)

The 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade GLO PM Youth are part of an experimental program component: an 8-week Kids Club. This "experiment" came from feedback from the GLO staff as well as the older GLO children. As the GLO Staff increased the quality of Kids Clubs for youth, they found themselves running out of time to finish the activities planned. Additionally, they found out that the youth in their Kids Club were more interested in learning new skills. Therefore, we decided to trial out an 8-week Kids Club to enhance the quality of these Clubs and to provide more long-term experiences for the older grades. Stay tuned for an update in May.

PM PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Curriculum Themes - PM GLO
Our Theme for February was NATURE! GLO PM learned about environments, animals, plants, and anything you can tie to NATURE! If you have not done so yet, please take a moment and check out the bulletin boards in the GLO classrooms! There is some really great Group Day projects there!

Our Theme for March is GO GREEN! As we near EARTH HOUR, we will be focusing on the three R's; Recycle, Reuse, Reduce and its relevance to our carbon footprint.

Social Skills

Our Social Skills for February continued from January as Problem Solving and Decision Making. The GLO Staff decided that since these two skills go hand in hand that they wanted to spend two months on Group Day activities surrounding these topics.

Our Social Skills activities for March are going to be centered around Compassion and Understanding. We will continue to learn about these Social Skills in April when we introduce Service Learning concepts to the GLO-wide community. Compassion and Understanding are key components and skills children of all ages need to possess to gain a better understanding of Service Learning and its impact in the community and themselves. The GLO Staff is excited and appreciative of all the comments and compliments they have been receiving in regards to Themes and Social Skills. We know that implementing these program components in a more specific way has been a huge success in making GLO an even more meaningful experience for our youth.
