Greetings!
Last month, GLO started its first-ever Read-A-Thon which has been off to a great start!! Our first goal is to collectively read 50,000 minutes!! For our Read-A-Thon Reward Celebration, the kids and classes have been brainstorming and then will vote on their ideas once we reach our goal. The Read-A-Thon has encouraged everyone to read more often, enjoy their time with books as well as read with others.
GLO will be continuing our Read-A-Thon throughout the month of March. Please ask your child how many minutes they have read today and have them write it in their GLO Minute Tracker!
During March, GLO will be focused on celebrating the super heroes in our lives (that definitely includes YOU!). The youth will be looking at the special people in our communities that help keep us safe and learn more about our parents' professions. Hopefully, these conversations will help the kids think about what they might want to be when they grow up! If you are interested in coming to talk to a group of students about your profession, please let me know. We would love to have you!
April is GLO's Health Month where we will be learning about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising and taking care of our Earth. If you work in the health field and can share some expertise or donate toothbrushes or other health related items, it would be much appreciated!!!
Sincerely, Jan Hoshida Site Director GLO at Dianne Feinstein 415-694-0960 feinsteind@gloinc.org

GLO Academy Update

In March and April, the 4th and 5th Graders are focusing much of their efforts in the Service Learning component of GLO Academy. The Service Learning draws on all of the skills that the youth have been working on over the duration of the school year and puts them into practical use in a collective project. The Service Learning activity and project is completely motivated, created, planned and executed by the youth. The act of service learning is so important to the development of assets and skill building because students use what they have learned to empower themselves and drive change in their own community.
On Friday, April 29th at 6:00pm, GLO invites all of our 4th and 5th Grade youth and parents to our GLO Academy Youth Summit where we will showcase the Service Learning projects of all six GLO sites. The GLO Academy Youth Summit will be held at Alice Fong Yu (1541 12th Avenue) and dinner will be provided.

Project Picture Books Showcase: March 24th!

During February and March, each class and child has been working on creating their very own Project Picture Book where they have created their own stories, will edit their writings, and will illustrate their own pictures. We will be showcasing the Project Picture Books on Thursday, March 24th from 5:30-7:00pm. We are asking that families that attend bring potluck appetizers for our showcase! Thanks for your support!

Developmental Reports!!
It's that time of the year again: GLO Developmental Reports and Parent/Teacher Conferences!! Every year, GLO staff use Developmental Reports to best assess how your child is doing in GLO. Different than report cards, Developmental Reports focuses more on social skills, self esteem, skill building, amongst other areas. GLO's Developmental Reports are based on SFUSD Academic Standards, Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets and youth development philosophies. In April, you will receive your child's Developmental Report and will have the opportunity to sign up for a Parent/Staff Conference. If you have any questions, please let me know!
