The US Department of State has updated their travel warning for Kenya. They urge visitors to understand risks and use common sense precautions during travel.

Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater ascent road closed last week and is expected to remain so for construction purposes for 1 year. This will increase drive times on some itineraries.  Call us for details.

Kenya Airways commenced a new, once-daily round trip flight between Nairobi and Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha, Tanzania.  The flight currently operates 6 days per week (no flights on Thursday) and will round out to 7 days per week in October.

Maralal Camel Derby: Aug 19-21, 2012.  The Derby is Kenya's best known and most prestigious camel race, attracting both local and international competitors alike. The derby also includes cycle races, road races, a peace run, and a triathlon.

July 2012
Greetings!
  Oscar Pistorius - PA

They only take place once every two years, but they are cause for the entire world to come together and celebrate athletic prowess, diversity and culture. The Olympic Games have a rich history, starting with the first Olympics that were held over 2,500 years ago, and every Games brings a renewed sense of excitement and competition to the world stage.

The Games are cause for celebration all over Africa as well. Ethiopia and Kenya probably have the best chance of taking home medals in 2012.  Ethiopia has produced some of the world's greatest runners, and is favored to win medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m events.  Kenya is one of Africa's most successful sporting nations, and they will send almost 80 team members including more than 30 track and field athletes to this year's Games. Botswana can't be counted out, either, as it is the home of a world champion in the 400m sprint, Amantle Montsho.  That same event for the men will see fierce competition from South Africa's double amputee Oscar Pistorious, also known as the 'blade runner'.

South Africans are as serious about sports as they are about braai (barbecue), and this year they will be well represented at the Games with 225 team members.  They qualified in field hockey, shooting, swimming, track and field, rowing, canoeing, archery and cycling amongst others.

We all have events that get us excited and we will root for our favorites.  We'll be glued to the results and will enjoy the camaraderie that comes with events that touch so many people and are so momentous.  Good luck in the games, Africa!

Preparing Bunny Chow, to Climb Kilimanjaro & More

JS and AM summitHave you tuned into The Safari Journal Blog lately?  Here's the latest.

Safari specialists Kim and Jenny are leading a Kilimanjaro Trek this August and they've been doing lots of training to get ready for the summit.  They are taking steep hikes, riding their bicycles to work and summiting 14,000' peaks here in Colorado's mountains.

The folks lucky enough to land a spot on this special trip aren't lagging behind either.  We're getting tough training and successful summit reports from several trekkers that are excited to make the climb.

We still have trip reports coming in from recent staff travels, so expect to see more first hand accounts of time in South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia.

We have new recipes including a cool watermelon salad from Namibia, which might be a nice dessert after a hearty helping of South African Bunny Chow.  You can find something to read with our latest book reviews, or content yourself with exciting armchair game reports to tide you over until your next safari.  There's something for everyone on the blog; see you there!

Check our Facebook page for the answer!

This time of year in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, wild dogs often remain in one place to den and give birth to new pups. It is a great place to visit for the opportunity to see wild dogs!
