Africa News & Events

Construction on a new, expanded terminal at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, Zambia will cause small disruptions for flyers in the coming months. Upon arriving and clearing customs and immigration, travelers must make their way around construction to the front entrance to the terminal building to meet their drivers. Call us with questions.

In other airport news, Maun airport in Botswana is under construction. Aircraft are being forced to park a fair distance from the terminal which requires passengers to walk up to 500 yards to or from their light aircraft.  Once again, contact us with any questions or concerns.

Southern Right Whales have begun to arrive along South Africa's gorgeous coastline to calve and breed. In any given year, about 40% of the entire population will visit the coast which offers the best land-based whale watching on Earth.

June 2012
Greetings!
Kelly & boys in Cape Town

Which African safari destination would I recommend above all others? What's my very favorite safari itinerary? What's my top all-time African experience? After 14 years in the safari business, these are tough questions to answer, so I've done my best and enlisted a little help from our staff here at Africa Adventure Consultants.

Favorite safari destination?  I could have listed Botswana's famed Okavango Delta, Uganda's dark and mysterious Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National ParkKenya's Masai Mara, or Zambia's South Luangwa National Park. But I'm going to take the easy road and answer, "where I've been most recently - South Africa - on a fantastic family safari."

Preferred safari itinerary? With so many safari possibilities and so little time, it's hard to choose. Last month, I picked Serengeti, Katavi and Mahale national parks in Tanzania! Read below for more top picks from our expert safari planners.

Most memorable safari exprience? Mine tend to be personal and if I told them, I would look very silly. Printable favorites include:

Of course, we'd love to hear your favorites-share your top stories or photos with us by posting on the AAC Facebook page, or emailing us at [email protected].

Safari Experts Pick Top Trips

Last month, we talked about  Kent's favorite Tanzania itineraryWhile it's never easy to pick just one favorite spot or itinerary in Africa, we strong-armed our talented staff into choosing a single trip each.

Safari Expert Kim Dodson favorite trip is our Botswana Deluxe + Victoria Falls Extension.  "Since I am a water person, I absolutely fell in love with the Okavango Delta.  The wetlands ecosystem, variety of activities (game drives, motor boat rides, canoeing, mokoro trips (dugout canoes with polers), and walks) and plethora of wildlife combined with the remoteness and discreet luxury of the tented camps, makes for a truly magical and memorable  experience! Victoria Falls is right next door and it's so impressive that it would be a shame to miss it."

Mala Mala Rhino - G HealeySafari Specialist Jenny Salentine loves South Africa for its incredible variety of game viewing (some parks are even malaria free). She likes the rich culture and great restaurants and shops in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, opportunities for active adventures like hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains, and learning about the country's rich history at museums and historical sites. "It's gorgeous coastline offers a great variety of activities like hiking, kayaking, swimming and more. Next trip I want to do our whole South Africa Active Adventure!"

Celebrating Tanzania's Best

Tanzania celebrated 50 years of independence in December 2011.  To recognize this milestone, we are highlighting a special Tanzania itinerary every month in 2012.

Selous Walking Safari - Nomad

This month we're getting off the vehicle and going on a bipedal safari.  The Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania is the largest reserve in Africa and our Selous Walking Safari lets you get away from the crowds and explore the African bush on foot. The Selous is vast and wild and is home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, baboons, kudu, and many other species of mammals and birds. On this walking safari, days are spent trekking through the wilderness and nights find you fly camping in mesh tents that allow for maximum evening star-gazing.

If you'd like more details on this trip or want to know what specials are on offer, give us a call.

Where in Africa?Beer tasting (for grown ups!) in Knysna

Where in Africa can you ride a camel led by real Samburu escorts? Where do you have the chance to see Southern Right WhalesCape Fur Seals and African Penguins in one day? How long does it take a pack of wild dogs to devour an impala? What are the most family-friendly safari destinations? Kent found these answers and much more on back-to-back trips to Kenya and South Africa (including Lesotho). Read more about it on our blog, The Safari Journal, and look out for more postings on Twitter and Facebook.
