May 2012
Greetings!
  Samburu warrior - Kent Redding

This is the time of year at least one of us is headed to Africa.  2012 has three of us headed to various locations.  I'm just back from Kenya having visited camps in the Laikipia Wildlife Area, the Masai Mara and the Tana Delta, home of Kenya's largest wetlands. After a short time at home I leave again - this time for South Africa and Lesotho for a family vacation.

Kim has spent the last several days in various private reserves bordering Kruger National Park in South Africa and is presently in Mozambique inspecting its white sand beaches and crystalline waters.  She'll head back to South Africa to visit another unique area prior to attending Indaba, Africa's largest travel trade show.

Finally, Gretchen departs for Namibia at the end of the week.  This is a unique place to visit and while it's less popular with travelers, it is a unforgettable destination with myriad sights and discoveries.

We travel every year - to kindle our passion for Africa and so that we can create nearly endless possibilities for your journey.  Keep an eye on the Safari Journal Blog over the next month to see everything from what I took on my trip with me to  photos and details from our journeys.  Travel with us and see which of our discoveries resonate with you.  We'll get you on the next plane there.

Safari njema,

Packing Essentials

As we're off to different corners of Africa we had a chat about what we have to have with us when we travel.  Not the list of

And off we go! 'what to bring on safari' (though some of these items appear on that list), but what we wouldn't even consider heading to the airport without.

Kent's number one item is a flashlight or headlamp.  It is invaluable while on safari - whether for going to and from your tent at night, or reading while your tent mate is sleeping or simply finding something in the darkness.

Everyone at Africa Adventure Consultants has something we wouldn't care to live without on our travels.  Want to see the rest of the list?  Visit our blog for the full story, then check out our Safari Shop to link to online stores that have every one of these items so you're prepared for your own safari adventure!

Tanzania Trip Spotlight

Tanzania celebrated 50 years of independence in December 2011.  To recognize this milestone, we are highlighting a special Tanzania itinerary every month in 2012.

Katavi hippo - G Healey

This month we're getting off the beaten path.  We asked Kent what his ultimate Tanzania trip might look like and he had a quick answer for us.  It is the inspiration for our new Exclusive Tanzania itinerary.

On this safari, you will visit Tanzania's undisputed gem, the Serengeti.  Three days in this park in a mobile camp will put you in the best position to see the wildebeest migration, along with the other herbivores and predators that follow this parade of nature.

From Serengeti, you will fly to Katavi National Park - one of Tanzania's best kept secrets.  Tanzania's third largest park is in the southwest part of the country and is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife, but most notably is bursting at the seams with hippos.  If you've ever wanted to see more (and more!) of them, this is the park for you.

Mahale beach dinner - G HealeyFinally, you will fly to the edge of Lake Tanganyika and ride on a dhow to Greystoke Mahale - a magical camp situated on a sandy beach with crystal clear water lapping gently on the shore.  You will spend a few incredible days trekking chimpanzees in its tropical forests.  It's an unforgettable experience.

If you'd like more details on this trip or want to know what specials are on offer for it, give us a call.

Trip Report TeaserKent with Samburu

One place Kent visited on his recent trip to Kenya was Sabuk, a camp near Laikipia.  Here is an excerpt from his trip report: A highlight was a visit to a local Samburu village where locals were celebrating the marriage of a young warrior and his bride.  We were told they had been dancing for a couple days, but they still looked to have plenty of gas in their tanks.  The warriors' jumps would turn many NBA players green with envy. Read more about his trip on our Safari Journal Blog.
