December 2010
Greetings!
  AfricAid students in Tanzania
During the holiday season when we count our blessings and give thanks for all we've received during the past year, it seems the perfect time to acknowledge those who go above and beyond the norm to help others. One such person (actually trio of people!) are the Shuylers - Rick, Nina and Ashley.

When Ashley was just 12, her parents took her on safari to Tanzania.  Instead of just enjoying the fantastic wildlife viewing, she became obsessed with the plight of the local girls who have little opportunity for education and advancement. From then on, she and her parents have worked tirelessly to improve educational opportunities for Tanzanian girls through their not-for-profit, AfricAid, which Africa Adventure Consultants proudly supports.

Please read more about AfricAid and other worthy Africa-centric charities below, and join us, if you are able, in supporting their good work.

Happy holidays,

'Tis the season of giving...

Check the blog this month to get some great gift ideas for travellers, or professional recommendations for camera gear for your safari.  But remember that it is the season for more than gifts, it is the season for giving.

AfricAid water projectAfricAid is one of the charities that we sponsor with every clients' safari.  Additionally, we partner with AfricAid for other fundraising activities to help bring educational opportunities to young Tanzanian women.  You can donate directly to them on their website, or consider making a donation on Colorado Gives Day December 8th to further enrich your gift.  Colorado Gives Day is highlighted in our events section of this newsletter.  One other unique way you can give to this worthy charity is by joining us on our Africaid's Tanzania safari in 2011.  Your participation in this trip facilitates a two year scholarship for a Tanzanian girl!

Another charity we have been working with for many years is Mwangaza.  Mwangaza was formed in 2000 to improve the quality of life for individuals in underserved communities throughout the developing world. They fund health-related projects, particularly those impacting the physically disabled. Donations are used to fund responsible development through the support of grassroots, community-based projects that foster long-term self-sufficiency. For more information, visit Mwangaza or give us a call.

To emphasize our thanks for this season of family, giving and plenty, we will double the AAC charitable donation to either Africaid or Mwanza with every new safari booked by December 31, 2010.

Brian Blatt joins AAC
Brian Blatt Bio PhotoSince first landfall in 1997, Brian has explored a good deal of the African continent, including the famed London-to-Cape Town overland route, though not all in one go!  From Timbuktu to the Namib Desert, Brian truly enjoys getting to know local peoples and their culture.  Ethiopia is a particular specialty: in 2004 Brian did a solo trek to little-known monasteries in Tigray, and then crewed a rafting expedition down the remote Omo River.   In 2008 he revisited all corners of the country while updating the Bradt Guide to Ethiopia.

Brian has been involved with educating orphans and street children in Tanzania since 2006, forming the non-profit organization Afrimation.  Afrimation's goal is to allow orphans and street children to continue their studies at the secondary level.

Talking about Afrimation, Brian said 'We also offer vocational training, and have had several success stories where graduates have received jobs.  October marked my most recent visit to Mwanza; as always, it was great catching up with the children and sharing meals together.  At that time several students were preparing for their National Examinations - we hope for good marks, and are always looking for new sponsors!'

We at Africa Adventure Consultants are pleased to welcome Brian Blatt to our staff.

Tarangire Sunset - Gretchen Healey

All I wanted to do now, was get back to Africa.  We had not left it yet, but when I would wake in the night, I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.
