Africa News and Travel Updates
Check out AAC in the news:
As you've gathered by now, AAC's Ethiopian Epic trip was featured in this month's National Geographic Traveler. Another of our trips is featured and there is an offer for exclusive savings to readers. Pick up the May/June issue or visit their website and see what the special is! Also, part two of a terrific trip report and a recommendation for AAC's services can be found on Destination Weddings website.
South Africa Whale Watching Updates: The first sightings of Southern Right Whales have been made some 2 months early this year. Gretchen saw one just off the coast in Cape Town just last weekend. While we are not sure why the whales are coming early, it augers well for a bumper whale watching season.
The Makgadikgadi is working to reclaim its ancient super-lake status! The result is an increasing abundance of wildlife: The annual zebra and wildebeest migration is out in full force, along with large numbers of gemsbuck, springbuck and the traditional predators that follow them! Call us if you would like to visit this thriving and unusual area in Botswana. |

Ethiopia: A Land of Art and Surprise
It is misleading that Ethiopia should frequently conjure images of a cracked, hard-baked plain dotted with famished children. Though poverty does exist, in reality much of this amazing country is alive and green. In fact, the central part of Ethiopia sits on an enormous, high plateau with beautiful mountain vistas. Addis Ababa is the third highest capital city in the world and has mild weather year round.
The other thing many people don't realize is that Ethiopia has one of the richest cultural histories in the world. Recent finds return the title of earliest discovered hominid fossil to Ethiopia. The Bible makes many references to Ethiopia, known as Kush, and the northern Axum Empire was one of the most advanced civilizations in the world from the 1st to 7th century AD.
Ethiopia has a great deal of art that reflects its long and fabled history. The island monasteries of Lake Tana are beautifully decorated with brightly-colored paintings from the Bible; of heaven and hell, angels and demons, Saints and dragons. Ethiopia is also known for its elaborately crafted silver and gold crosses, which come in a number of styles reflecting different kingdoms and historical periods. You also have the chance to see illuminated manuscripts written in ancient Geez script, and even older statues carved by the pre-Axumite Sabaeans.
To say that Ethiopia is unique is an understatement. The only way to even begin to understand is to go and see for yourself. Our Historical Ethiopiatour is an 8-day trip that takes you to the highlights of the northern Historic Circuit. Our 13-day Trekking Ethiopia trip combines visits to castles and churches with hiking in the tremendously scenic Simien Mountains. Or you might opt for the Ethiopian Epic, a 12-day cultural adventure that combines the history of the north with visits to the tribes of the Omo Valley and that is featured in this month's National Geographic Traveler Magazine.

Kent just back from Botswana
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an enormous swath of rugged land in the middle of Botswana. Formerly home to San bushmen, the Reserve is now largely uninhabited, save for a few camps in the far south. The heart of the Reserve is Deception Valley, a vast, shallow depression famed for the groundbreaking lion research of Mark and Dehlia Owens. Their story is documented in Cry of the Kalahari, which is a fantastic read.
Kent recently visited the new Kalahari Plains Camp located in the Reserve. The camp is very eco-friendly with a huge solar array for power. Water is collected from rooftops and piped to cisterns where it is treated before use. The tents here are very open and roomy; simple, but nice. All of the rooms have star-gazing/bed platforms on the roof. The night skies here are absolutely incredible - there are few places on earth with less light pollution.
An excerpt from Kent's travel journal:
It's 5 am on my first morning at KP camp. It's cold and my tent flaps are open and I am under a warm duvet. It's almost hot water bottle season. Lions are calling nearby. After the hour's flight from Maun yesterday, we landed and 20 minutes later were seeing 50+ oryx and a hundred or more springbok grazing on short grass in a slight depression, which is the "plains" of Kalahari Plains Camp.
It is much bushier than I expected and it's green, but that will change soon. Then, we saw a big male and also a female lion, and they are mating with the brother lion watching on. The pride has 10 members including 2 adult males. No little cubs just yet. After spaghetti and meatballs and salad for lunch we did an afternoon drive where we saw the same lions and 3 cheetah plus a honey badger. They have brown hyena here but no spotted hyena. There are also leopard and smaller cats like African wildcat.
One highlight of the trip was doing a San Bushman walk. During this leisurely two hour excursion you get to see how bushmen hunt and gather, using poison arrows with detachable tips, and bird traps. According to the bushmen their favorite food is Kori bustard, though they hunt much larger animals as well.
