April 2010
Greetings!
The 40th anniversary of earth day is April 22. Can you believe this seminal event designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment has been celebrated for 40 years?
Although we should strive to do everything we can to help our planet every day, Earth Day is a great reminder for us all to make personal commitments to sustainability and create a global green economy. Here at Africa Adventure Consultants, we are upping the ante to do more to support sustainable tourism in Africa. Case in point are our new green itineraries. Recently, we introduced our Tanzania Green Safari and have just introduced our new Mozambique Green Safari. Later this month, we will unveil our new South Africa Green safari. All these trips use the most environmentally friendly camps and lodges in their respective countries.
Read on for more details.
And thanks for everyone for supporting us in our nomination to Travel & Leisure Magazine's best companies list. We hope to be named to the official list in the August issue.
Safari Njema,

Every Day is Earth Day
There are environmental heroes found everywhere. They celebrate and protect the wonders of the Earth every day. There are the famous and the unnamed. A few that have had tremendous impact in Africa are:
Wangari Maathai: In 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She is the founder of the Green Belt Movement, which inspired Kenyans to plant more than 45 million trees, as well as an environmentalist, a civil and women's rights activist, and a parliamentarian.
Fatima Jama Jibrell: In 2008 she won the National Geographic/Buffet Award for her work as the founder of the humanitarian organization Horn Relief and co-founder of Sun Fire Cooking, which provides affordable solar cookers to the Somali people, saving the remaining limited acacia forests of Somalia.
Jane Goodall: she has dedicated her life to the study and protection of chimpanzees, as well as to the protection of the natural environment. She created the Jane Goodall Institute to educate people about and to protect the great apes, as well as to engage youth to care for the human and animal communities and the environment.
What can you do to lighten your footprint or deepen your impact when you travel? Choose a company like Africa Adventure Consultants for your travel needs. We have strict standards for environmental stewardship and social responsibility for all of our partners in Africa.

Beers & Safaris in Denver!

In March we had our Beers and Safaris Mozambique Event. Flying Dog beers were flowing, and there was plenty of food and wine as well.
Guest speakers Rob and Jos Janisch gave a short talk on Gorongosa National Park, followed by the promised sneak-preview of the upcoming National Geographic Special 'Africa's Lost Eden'. Check your local listings--the special premiers on April 12! The scenery at Gorongosa is absolutely stunning, and the scope of this wildlife restoration project is unrivaled anywhere. American philanthropist Greg Carr has pledged 40 million dollars of his own money over the next 20 years, as well as raising an additional 80 million dollars from other sources. Buffalo and zebra populations are already rebounding, and predator populations are expected to follow. For more information on visiting Gorongosa check out our 15-day Adventurer's Mozambique Safari, or our brand new Mozambique Eco-Adventure, the second in a new line of special "Green" Safaris.

Did You Know...Fun Wildlife Facts!
Baboons are fun and interesting creatures to watch. But did you know that baboons are connoisseurs? They are omnivorous, but mostly vegetarian, with an apparent fondness for grapes! We've seen them steal food from backpacks and cars, but their latest antics may cause a chardonnay shortage in South Africa, as they have been eating literally TONS of grapes every week from the vines in the Franschhoek Valley!
Go and visit these clever and naughty creatures and taste some wine (maybe red?) on our South Africa Wine & Safari and see what all the fuss is about. Or add a visit to Cape Town to your safari so you can get a taste of what's on offer and see these 'urban' baboons in action!
