Africa News and Updates

TSA Updates Before You Fly:

Please review the updated TSA requirements and efforts following the Dec. 25 Northwest Airlines incident. Additional security measures are being taken for flights coming to U.S. destinations, while security screening measures for passengers on flights departing from U.S. destinations remain the same. Read the latest updates on the TSA website.

Porini Camps Gives Back:

Our partner in Kenya, Porini Camps, donated 14 tons of food to the Selenkay community near their Amboseli Porini Camp instead of giving holiday gifts to guests and associates. Visit the Amboseli Porini Camp on our Kenya Value Safari and venture out on a walking safari with the Maasai warriors of the Selenkay! Save 10% if you book by Mar 31!

Northwest/Delta Merger:

Beginning in January 2010 the Northwest Airlines code (NW) will no longer appear on any tickets or flights - the code will be replaced with Delta Airlines' DL code or KLM's KL code. Stay tuned for more updates on your Northwest/Delta flights!

January 2010
Greetings!

Happy New Year! Like you, the turn of the calendar gives us the chance to set new goals, explore new opportunities and plan for the future. This year, we will focus on giving more back in the form of donations and new charities. Thanks to you, we recently gave Mwangaza $3,700 for their work with disabled kids in Tanzania. My son, Tate, is p
Tate at Mwangaza Preschoolictured below at the Mwangaza preschool. (We'd also like to hear your new non-profit suggestions, so email me with your favorite organization in Africa.) We've pledged to increase the sustainability of our safaris and enhance our industry-leading green program, and, we've already created a slew of new safaris to make 2010 special. Stay tuned for new developments in our upcoming monthly e-newsletters.

And don't forget some of our 2009 mantras still ring true in 2010:

·    Flight prices are still low: I just found an economy class fare to South Africa this spring for less than $1,400 round-trip!
·    Many safari specials have been extended through June 2010 ($600 off Botswana Deluxe Safari) and others are good for the whole year (25% off Wildest Tanzania Safari)!
·    We're offering a free digital camcorder for any NEW safari of $5,000 or more per person booked by March 31, 2010 (one per group)! The only hitch is that we want to see your videos!

Read on for other important updates about TSA security issues and news from Africa, new specials, highlights from clients in our Traveler's Corner and Gretchen's trip report from her recent safari in Tanzania. Have a great year filled with new adventures!

Elephants on a walking safari in Zambia Make 2010 An Unforgettable Year

We've already spent a lot of time planning and creating the very best safaris and experiences to make 2010 unforgettable.

We've come up with a short-list of our most highly recommended experiences in Africa and how you can make them a reality this year. Be sure to visit our blog for the complete list.

1) Climb Kilimanjaro: While reaching the summit of Africa's highest peak may not be on everyone's to-do list, those of you who are up to the challenge know who you are! There's arguably nothing more memorable than sunrise at the top of the 19,000-foot-plus peak!

2) Snorkel with Whale Sharks: If you hit the Spice Island of Zanzibar and nearby Pemba during the right time of the year, you can snorkel along side these gentle giants and s
Sossusvlei dunes in Namibiatay at one of many boutique beach-front lodges.

3) "Surf" the dunes of Sossusvlei: Head to off-the-beaten-path Namibia and watch the sunrise glow vibrant red and orange over the tallest sand dunes in the world. Then 'surf' your way down!

4) Splurge in Botsw
ana: Take that once-in-a-lifetime safari that will leave you speechless on every level: unmatched wildlife, truly untouched wilderness and the top safari camps in Africa!

5) Step back in time in Ethiopia: You'll feel like you are on the set of an Indiana Jones movie, but you'll actually be exploring the living museum that is Ethiopia. From ancient stone-carved churches to hidden island monasteries, visit Ethiopia before everyone else does!

Giving Back in Africa: Mwangaza

Kent at Mwangaza - 2007In 2009 Africa Adventure Consultants donated, thanks to the generous contributions of our travelers, $3,700 to Mwangaza, Inc.

Mwangaza was created to support health-related projects, particularly those that address the needs of the physically disabled in Africa. Mwangaza believes in community-based programs that are culturally sensitive, financially responsible and result in real and measurable improvements in the lives of those served. In KiSwahili, mwangaza means "beacon" - and the organization seeks to illuminate a path to a better life for people with disabilities.

Mwangaza currently has projects in the Manyara area of Tanzania where they helped fund and build water tanks for schools. They also have created the "Healthy Schools" program that focuses on teaching children proper hygiene. Travelers can visit the projects in Tanzania to see the efforts first-hand - just let us know and we'll arrange a visit on your safari!

Reasons to Celebrate in Africa!

Priest in LalibelaFor nearly a decade now, Africa Adventure Consultants has crafted fine, personalized safaris for hundreds of clients. We are always interested and excited to hear why our travelers do go to Africa and what they are celebrating! Here are some of our favorite reasons to celebrate and what adventures we most recommend:

Celebrate a graduation: high school (Tanzania Adventure Safari), college (Climbing Kili) or your MBA or PhD (Botswana Deluxe). A safari is always better than a briefcase!

Celebrate your love: Anniversaries, honeymoons or romantic Priest in Lalibelagetaways are hard to trump in Africa...some of our travelers' favorites include South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. Remember Valentine's Day is coming up!

Celebrate your birthday: Why stay at home for a dinner out and cake for a milestone? Gather family and friends and rough it trekking Africa's peaks or experience the finer things in life - we'll craft a birthday safari in your style.

Celebrate life: Find what you are looking for on a journey of personal discovery (we'll be sharing some of our own in 2010 - stay tuned). Discover a new talent, explore a spiritual land or get lost where few others venture.

Did You Know...Fun Wildlife Facts!

Croc in the Chobe RiverDid you know that the Nile Crocodile has between 64 and 68 cone shaped teeth, which are constantly being replaced as they get lost or damaged? An individual tooth lasts for about 2 years and a single crocodile might go through over 2000 teeth in its lifetime! Visit Zambia's South Luangwa to see the Nile Crocodile's pearly whites (from a safe distance!) on our Zambia Walking Safari or our Wild Zambia and Malawi Safari.
