November 2009
Greetings!
What do you do with a wildlife park with no animals? If you are Greg Carr, millionaire and co-inventor of voice mail technology, you spend $40 million on a multi-year project to repopulate the park with mammal species, build roads, create a functioning anti-poaching system, and help and engage local communities through education and better health care. I recently had the good fortune to see Carr's ambitious undertaking developing in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, which was decimated during and after the country's 15-year civil war. And, I'm not the only one who's visited. Watch a great story, Gorongosa, that aired earlier this year on 60 Minutes. (FYI, this was reported by our former client and 60 Minutes' correspondent Scott Pelley!) Also, look out for a National Geographic special on the park early next year, and read more about Gorongosa and Mozambique's beaches in my trip report below.
While Mozambique fights to revive its formerly rich game parks, its neighbors in Southern Africa--South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia amongst others---continue to offer superlative game viewing. Our clients continually give outstanding reports for Big 5 sightings and other great wildlife experiences at camps such as Mombo, recently ranked the number one resort in Africa in the 2009 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards and featured in our Ultimate Botswana Safari, and Mala Mala, featured in our Southern Africa Deluxe Safari. East Africa continues to offer wild, National Geographic-style safaris and great primate viewing.
Read on for some great tips on the best seasons to travel to Africa, fun events in the Denver area, a wildlife quiz and more all put together by Sales & Marketing Director, Lyndsay Harshman.
Safari Njema,

Kent's Trip Report: Mozambique!
Landing in Beira, Mozambique, one can't help but wonder when the civil war really ended (1992). The buildings, some riddled with bullet holes, droop next to the roads. Laundry hangs from the balconies of stained, colonial-era hotels that are missing doors and windows. But even in their skeletal form, it's easy to imagine these ghosts filled with wealthy Portuguese businessmen and tourists during more prosperous times.
Today, Mozambique is one of the poorest nations on earth with little industry, few natural resources, low wages and a shockingly short life expectancy. And while I couldn't get out of Beira fast enough, I have fallen in love with this emerging Southern African nation.
Start with friendly people, add thousands of miles of pristine beaches, and mix in scenic, phoenix-like wilderness area, and you have today's Mozambique, a nation on the rise. Read more of Kent's trip report on Mozambique and its beautiful coast.

New Gorilla Family Habituated in Uganda
A newly habituated 30-member gorilla family began receiving its first trekkers last month. The new family, named the Nshongi group, is located in Rushaga in the southwestern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This will be the biggest group opened for tourism in the country and is expected to boost Uganda's gorilla tourism capacity. The family was announced at a festive event in the park, which was attended by celebrities and government officials. Plan your next adventure to track the great apes in Uganda.

The Best Times to Travel to Africa
What is the best time to travel to Africa? There's not one answer considering the sheer size of the continent and the varied climates within each region. Read on for details on when and where to travel in Africa.
East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda The nations making up the region of East Africa generally have similar weather patterns, with a few microclimatic variations due to elevation and proximity to the coast. In recent years, global warming does seem to be affecting East Africa including heavier than normal rainfall, as well as drought conditions. Another sure sign of global warming is the disappearance of the glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro - read more in this CNN article. The cooler months in East Africa are June through October (ideal times for game viewing and travel); the warmer months are December to March (the peak season to witness the calving in Tanzania).
The rains are split into two 'seasons' - the short rains and the long rains. The short rains fall in November and Dec ember and are lighter and more sporadic. Falling from mid-March/April through May, the long rains are heavy downpours that can easily affect road conditions and walking safaris or open vehicle game drives. The Latest Wildlife Sightings in Africa Botswana's Chief's Camp recently reported a sighting of eight adult wild dogs along with five pups near Palm Island. On the same day they also spotted the two resident white rhinos, Serondela and Sergeant, fighting for dominance. Not long after the fight started, S ergeant wondered off alone while Serondela proudly reclaimed his dominance. The southern white rhino is a great conservation success story.Thought to be extinct in the late 19th century, a small population of less than 100 was discovered in South Africa in 1895, and after more than a century of protection and management, southern white rhinos are now the only non-endangered rhinos, classified as Near Threatened. Other incredible sightings in Africa include Hawksbill turtles in the Seychelles, mating white rhinos at Mombo Camp and a surprising encounter between a heron and a fish eagle.
