October 2009
Greetings!
Happy Birthday Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)! This 3,200-square-mile reserve was established by the Tanzanian government in 1959 to provide a place where millions of animals could coexist with Maasai people living their traditional pastoralist lifestyle. The jewel of the NCA is Ngorongoro Crater, a hundred-square-mile caldera, also known as the "Noah's Ark of Africa" and the "8th Natural Wonder of the World." But the NCA is also home to famous Olduvai Gorge, rich mountain forests, the southern Serengeti Plains and much more. Many of our clients have had wonderful wildlife experiences here, and although the NCA continues to face challenges with overcrowding and resource management, we applaud and congratulate its many successes during its anniversary year.
North and east of the NCA in Serengeti National Park, things are heating up with the return of the great wildebeest migration. As the wildebeest and zebra make their way to the Serengeti from Kenya, guests are enjoying incredible mass movements, river crossings and predation. Please follow us on Facebook, read our blog or follow me on Twitter for updates on their movements. We also have two new great tours in northern Tanzania--our Luxury Tanzania Safari and our value-priced group Kilimanjaro Climb--and a number of 2009 discounts have been extended to early 2010, if you want to see it for yourself! Please read on for more news on Africa and AAC, including a fantastic photographer's tour in Ethiopia.
Safari Njema,

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Turns 50!
Tanzania celebrates 50 years of nature conservation with the anniversary of the establishment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) and the Serengeti National Park. The NCA is a UNESCO World Heritage site and covers about 3,200 square miles. The area is home to Oldupai (Olduvai) Gorge, where the Leakey's discovered the 1.75 million-year-old remains of Homo habilis, a myriad of wildlife, and, of course, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. The Serengeti National Park is 5,600 square miles and is known for its predators and the wildebeest migration. Check out our top 5 favorite safaris that visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area:

Climbing the 'Roof of Africa'
At 19,340 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa. Those who climb Kili will explore lush forests, giant heather, alpine deserts and expansive glaciers. Reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak, trekkers look down on the Tanzania, Kenya and seemingly the continent to see why this is called the 'Roof of Africa'.
We offer several high-quality Kili climbs on the Machame, Rongai, Umbwe and Lemosho routes. While most of our treks are private trips, beginning this Fall, we are now offering a highly-affordable, scheduled group departure on the Rongai Route. This route on the northern side of the mountain is less crowded than some other routes, but is also quite steep and requires a high level of fitness.
Every trek is staffed with excellent and experienced guides, helpful porters and skilled chefs, and fully outfitted with comfortable sleeping tents, warm dining tents and private bathroom tents. Our first priority with any Kilimanjaro trek is safety. Read more about what's included on our Kilimanjaro climbs. Read about Kent's most recent climb up Kili on our blog.

Ethiopia Cultural & Photography Tour
Explore Ethiopia's rich Northern Route, complete with visits to Bahir Dar's island monasteries, Gonder's castles, Lalibela's stone-carved churches and Axum's religious relics. In the South's Lower Omo Valley, visit with local tribal groups while surrounded by the barren but stunning scenery of the area. Throughout this photography tour, spend ample time photographing with the guidance of professional photographers from the U.S. Learn more about Bob Harvey & Diane Kelsay, the photography leaders, and read a recent article they wrote on exploring other cultures through photography. On this journey the group will interact with the local population and explore the rich cultural heritage sites with excellent local guides. Bob and Diane will offer daily photography instruction and insight, with a re-cap and photo editing session (bring your laptop!) each evening. Amateur photographers can plan on improving their photography skills, as well as their "photographic eye." Space is limited as we have designed this trip for a small group of photographers--reserve your spot now. View the complete itinerary or contact us for more information. Photos by Andy Richter.
