New Southern Africa Flight
|
|
South Africa's Airlink service will fly directly from Nelspruit Kruger to Livingstone, Zambia beginning on August 17, 2009. The flights will run Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.
The new route will allow travelers to enjoy a direct flight--same day departure and arrival--between two of Africa's most sought after destinations--Kruger NP and Victoria Falls. This will avoid the current need for travelers to overnight in Johannesburg en route to Livingstone.

April 2009
Greetings!
Summer is upon us and, like many of you, we are enjoying seasonal activities like baseball games, barbeques, family camping trips to the mountains, and swimming at the pool. With so much to do, planning for future trips often takes a back seat, but there is no better time to book your next safari. September and October are the very best months for game viewing in most parks in East and Southern Africa, and many specials and discounts have been extended through the fall and winter. Airfares during this time are as low as they've been in years--some as low as $1,200 round trip. It's certainly time to look ahead and start planning!
As I fill my third large bag for my upcoming four-day fishing expedition--no weight limit on this trip--I'm reminded of how challenging it can be to meet the stingy baggage limits on many safaris. We field quite a number of calls each month from frantic clients who are having trouble "making weight," so this month Lyndsay Harshman has put together a great article on "what to pack on safari." Other useful information in this edition of Safari News includes photos of a new great camp in the Serengeti--Sayari Camp--and links to great family safari options for later this year and next summer. Enjoy the warm weather--I'm off fishing!

What to Pack for an African Safari:
Packing for an African safari can be a big undertaking, but with the right advice you can be prepared and comfortable on your safari. Don't over-pack (see left)--packing light is key!
It's important to remember that not all of Africa is tropical and hot year-round. Game drives often start before dawn and end after dusk when temperatures quickly drop. The sun is very strong and adequate sun protection in crucial. On a typical safari light weight hiking shoes or trail shoes tend to be a good option. Read more on What to Pack here.

In Africa: Lunar Rainbow at Vic Falls
One of the big events of the week, which only a few lucky travelers witnessed was the lunar rainbow over the Victoria Falls. This only happens at full moon and with the amount of water cascading ove r the falls it was a fantastic sight. Sussi & Chuma lodge reported excellent viewing of the rainbow. The Zambezi River is in full flood and birding in the area has been phenomenal. The Fish eagles can be heard from the lodge and other major sightings include a pair of Pels Fishing Owls and a pair of Vereaux Owls. Watch Nature videos on Victoria Falls here and view a photo essay on the falls here.

Redesigned Sayari Camp Opens!
The former seasonal Sayari Camp in Tanzania's northern Serengeti has been redesigned as one of the most breathtaking properties in Tanzania. The camp retains the heart of a bush camp, while offering excell ent style and delivering a high level of personalized service. The central focus remains on the sensational game viewing in the area. Sayari Camp's 15 luxury tents are split into 2 wings, each with their own dining and entertainment areas, so the camp still feels very intimate. Tents offer panoramic views of the Serengeti, private verandas with large day beds, contemporary furniture and an en suite bathroom with flush toilet, indoor shower, double wash basins and a free-standing bath. The camp's central area consists of a large lounge and bar , a rock swimming pool, fireplace, and two 'chill out' areas away from the main lounge providing a quiet area to read or bird watch. The Migration, together with their predators, is the main draw for guests at Sayari Camp--especially from August to November--where most guests are lucky enough to witness river crossings. Sayari Camp now offers walking safaris, as well. Outside the migration season the game viewing is excellent with resident predators, herds of plains game (Eland, Topi) and elephants all appearing when the migration passes. New TSA Flight Security Requirements
Beginning in mid-2009 (May for domestic flights, October for international flights), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all airline passengers to provide their full name, date of birth and gender as it is shown on the identification document that will be presented at airport security check-points. This information is not optional. The purpose of collecting this information is to allow TSA to perform terrorist watch list matching that is currently being done by each airline. Failure to provide the required elements in advance could: (1) inhibit your ability to get a boarding pass either at home or at the airport until the information has been provided; and, (2) require you to undergo additional airport security screening. For more information please visit the TSA website here, or call 1-866-778-1089.
