Notes from the Cellar
File This Under New Discoveries
Yes, thats right. New discoveries. Even after 30 years of analytical tasting and just when we thought we had tasted it all, a wine comes along that has such a unique and particular aromatic and flavor profile that it forces you to sit upright in your seat and says pay attention. Thats what happened this week when I tasted the delicious dry white wine from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini called - ready for this - Koutsoyiannopoulos. Thats the name of the man (Yorgos) who runs the oldest winery on the island, dating back to 1870. The grape he uses for this wine is called Assyrtiko, one that many consider to be the great white grape of Greece, documented to have been growing in Santorini for 3000 years! This wine is made with only the free run juice, fermented in stainless steel to capture the beautiful fresh citrus aromatics and flavors - lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange - they're all here, pure and unadulterated. But there is something else here, underlying and very compelling. It makes me put my nose back in the glass time and time again. Something that can only come to the wine through the old vines planted in these ancient volcanic soils - warm and dry made of cinder, rust, lava and pomace. It's an earthy minerality behind that lovely citrus fruit that gives this wine complexity and individuality and places it among the other delicious and interesting wines of the world that have come to find a home in The Kittle House cellar.

And guess what else Mr. Koutsoyiannopoulos makes - Vin Santo. Now we're all familiar with the many delicious Vin Santo coming from Italy, but did you know the name Vin Santo means wine from Santorini! It's where it all started a few thousand years ago - and this one is as authentic as it gets. Its dark caramel color makes you think oxidized and heavy, but the nose is deep with lots of layers and the palate is surprisingly bright and elegant. It has richness and depth without being too sweet, and the beautiful apricot/creme brulee finish goes on and on. Perfectly balanced, this is quite simply a pleasure to drink and a wonderful way to finish a meal.
Come in and try a glass of these unique and wonderful discoveries. If you are unfamiliar with the wines from the island of Santorini, consider this a crash course on how delicious they can be and a wonderful place to start your exploration.
