September 25, 2008revolution
amon ra
An Australian Winemaker Dinner to Remember! We look forward to welcoming two superstars from the land down under for an evening of great wine, food and conversation. Joining us for this evening's dinner tasting are Ben Glaetzer of Amon Ra, Anaperenna, Godolphin and many other benchmark wines, arguably the preeminent winemaker in Australia - and Corinna Rayment, creator of the wonderful Oliver's Taranga, Revolution and Expatriate wines.

Amon-Ra has become one of Australia's icon wines. Made from 100% Shiraz sourced from vineyards ranging in age from 80-120 years and with microscopic yields of 0.5 tons per acre, the 2006 Amon-Ra was aged for 15 months in new French and American oak. The wine is a thick, glass-coating, purple/black in color. The aromas cover a wide range of scents including smoke, vanilla, pepper, Asian spices, coconut, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Thick, rich, layered, and complete, this monumental wine offers extraordinary intensity and length. It requires 10-15 years to fully evolve and should easily last through 2040. Hats off to Ben Glaetzer for producing an extraordinary portfolio!

The renowned winemaker, Ben Glaetzer, sources all of his fruit for this label from the Ebenezer district in the northern Barossa. Many knowledgeable experts cite this sub-region as the finest in the Valley.

The 2006 Shiraz "Expatriate," a barrel sample, appears to have even more potential than the 2005. A glass-coating, saturated purple in color, it has a super-expressive bouquet of pain grille, spice box, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied, dense, and packed with fruit, it has tons of flavor, great balance, and a long, pure finish. Give it 8-10 years to unfold and drink it through 2036.

The Wine(s) of the Month - In Praise of Beaujolais

diochon moulinAs the hot summer days turn into cool summer nights, our drinking preferences also change from the light summer whites and roses to cool summer reds. And what better red to drink on a cool summer night then the one made from the Gamay grape grown in the region of Beaujolais, just north of the city of Lyon in southern Burgundy.

breton morgonIn fact, when they come directly from our cellar at about 55-60 degrees, the wines from Beaujolais are as deliciously refreshing as any white wine, but with the addition of ripe, juicy red fruit flavors.

Maybe its because of the very successful marketing of the (not very good) Beaujolais Nouveau wines that has caused people to not take the great wines of
Beaujolais seriously.
thivin brouilly 1 To change the public's perception, it takes a special person willing to go into a misunderstood region, like Beaujolais, and find out who is making the best wines, make arrangements to bring them into the country and set out to try and convince the wine drinking public that they are indeed the wines that make that wine region special. Thank you Kermit Lynch, the legendary wine merchant based in Berkeley California, for having done just that - he went into Beaujolais and identified several of the great winemakers, vineyard sites and wines. He imports them into America and offers them to us as some of the very best wines made in this unique place, from this single grape, by very talented winemakers. The end result for us is found in the wine labels above, outstanding examples of three of the ten designated Cru Beaujolais (or best places to grow Gamay in Beaujolais) produced by three talented and dedicated winemakers making the benchmarks for quality in the region.

The three wines, Chateau Thivin Brouilly 2006, Domaine Diochon Moulin a Vent Vieilles Vignes 2006 and the Guy Breton Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2006
are changing peoples perceptions of Beaujolais on a nightly basis at The Kittle House, as we are currently offering them by both the glass and the bottle. The response has been fantastic as people are discovering what a pleasure it is to drink a wine - with food - that isn't heavy or over extracted and emphasizes delicious ripe fruit, reasonable alcohol levels, bright acidity and soft tannins. And there is also something else in these wines - that sense of place - that something extra about a wine that can only come from the land where the vines, the soil and the rest of the elements come together to make a unique and special grape growing environment. The French call it terroir, and with these wines that special place is Beaujolais.
