Healthcare-associated infections declined in 2010

despite successes, more work is needed to ensure safe care and eliminate healthcare-associated infections 


HAIsFour common infections seen in healthcare facilities declined in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  In a policy summit at the National Journal in Washington D.C., CDC staff detailed the reductions that are occurring in infection rates in U.S. hospitals. "These successes reflect investments not only in hospital practices, but in our national and state public health capacity," said Denise Cardo, M.D., director of CDC's Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. "Preventing infections in healthcare saves lives and reduces healthcare costs."

November 30th - Last day for eligible...Important Updates on Registration for the EHR Incentive Programs

November 30, 2011,
is the last day for eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) to register and attest to receive an incentive payment for Federal fiscal year 2011.

AHRQ Healthcare Innovations Exchange


AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange has added an Innovations by State Profile page that allows visitors to the site to search for Innovations and Resources by state. The State Profile page includes:

  • A State Selection Map and a State Selection Drop-Down Menu that lists Innovation Profiles by State
  • State-based AHRQ resources for healthcare quality improvement including State Snapshots, quality diagnostic tools and a factsheet on State and National Health IT Demonstration Projects
  • Quality Tools that provide States with practical information including resource guides and workbooks to improve the quality of care for asthma and diabetes

CMS Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI)


CMMI has announced a new program called the Innovation Advisors Program. The program is designed to
help professionals deepen skills that will drive improvements to patient care and reduce costs.

Shared Savings Program Final Rule and Advance Payment Model Announced


On October 20, 2011, HHS announced final rules and a new opportunity for financial support to help doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers work together to improve the care for Medicare patients.  By choosing to become an Accountable Care Organizations, providers will be able to share in savings by better coordinating patient care, providing high quality care, and using health care dollars more wisely. Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative


The Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) initiative is a new CMS-led, multi-payer initiative fostering collaboration between public and private healthcare payers to strengthen primary care for all Americans. Primary care is critical to promoting health, improving care, and reducing overall system costs, but it has been historically under-funded and under-valued in the United States. The CPC initiative offers a way to break through this historical impasse by inviting payers to join with Medicare in investing in primary care in 5-7 selected localities across the country. Obama Administration's regulatory reductions to save healthcare system nearly $1.1 billion


Healthcare CostsNew proposed rules released on October 20 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would reduce unnecessary, obsolete, or burdensome regulations and save hospitals and healthcare providers nearly $1.1 billion each year and over $5 billion over 5 years. The new proposals regarding the rules for hospitals that treat Medicare and Medicaid patients were developed in response to President Obama's call on all Federal agencies to eliminate burdensome and unnecessary regulations.
