WCA Member Marguerite Beck-Rex Awarded 2008 Corinne Mitchell Award

On December 6th, 2008 over 50 WCA/DC members gathered together in the Van Ness area of Washington, DC to enjoy the annual WCA/DC potluck holiday brunch and to honor the 2008 Corinne Mitchell Award Winner, Marguerite Beck-Rex.

Marguerite has made many contributions to the community as an artist and women's movement activist.

As founder of   "Painting in Provence", starting in 2002,  she annually organized and led groups of artists, all women with the exception of one brave man, on painting trips in Provence, followed by serial individual or group exhibits of paintings of Provence by these artists. In 2008, she organized and coordinated a WCA tour of three artists' studios in the Van Ness North Cooperative.

Also in 2008,  as founder of an Arts Exhibits Committee in the Van Ness North Cooperative, Marguerite launched the First Annual Van Ness Neighbor Network Art Exhibit, a 3-day event involving 20 artists and 27 volunteers, many of them women, living in the Van Ness North Cooperative.

Marguerite won first place in the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Faculty and Student Exhibit.  In that same year she was one of three top awardees at a Market 5 Gallery Annual Market Weekend Exhibit.

In the Early 1980s, Marguerite won a Suburban Newspapers of America First Place Feature Award for a series about lack of training for women in prisons, as compared to training programs for men.  In the mid 1980s as a crusading feminist journalist, she won a Susan B. Anthony Award for Ohio NOW for doing the most for Ohio women in that time period.  Marguerite  won a first place Clarion Award from Women in Communications for a series of columns exposing conditions for women in Cleveland area.

 Other Accomplishments:

As a member of the Big Mama Poetry Troupe, in the late 1980s, she wrote and performed in feminist poetry programs in the Midwest and Northeast, co-published two volumes of the poetry of the troupe and was published in a variety of literary journals and the Christian Science Monitor.

As founder of  the 12-year old DC Essay Writers Group of a freelance organization called American Independent Writers,  that published essays in the Christian Science Monitor  including one on learning to play basketball, football, softball and other sports at age 60.
Most other members of the group published during that time period as well.

 Art Study

Professional Career
