Summer 2008 |
|
Greetings!
Summer is a great time to get out and visit member exhibitions and to participate in activities that keep the creative spirit alive. In recent weeks WCA/DC members have visited Art-o-matic, taken a sketch trip to the zoo, and participated in our annual national board meeting here in Washington, DC. Members had the opportunity to meet with other WCA members from across the country and participate in social events surrounding the meeting, including a tour of the US Capitol, a panel discussion at the Arlington Arts Center, and a tour of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Hope everyone will take some time this summer to connect with fellow members and nourish the creative spirit within!

Communications Plan Update by Katie Weaver
The new WCA/DC website willl be up and running in August, so stay tuned for the launch next month! (Note: the URL will remain the same www.wcadc.org)
The site has expanded features and a new look, including a new logo, an online member directory, an event calendar for members to post information about their exhibitions, and artist pages (like an online portfolio), which will be introduced for a small fee later this year.
Please consider a donation to WCA/DC to help offset the costs of the new website. We count on member support to keep the organization strong. Donation details are listed in the fundraising article.
Thank you!

Breakfast with The Elephants
by Holly Dodge May 18, 2008
Our trip to the Zoo was a great success - a wonderful time was had by all. Technically, the Pandas and the people had breakfast, and the Elephants did their yoga, but I will get to that! Marilyn Hayes and her husband Knox along with Jennifer Judelsohn and her husband David met me at the National Zoo on Sunday morning early - around 9 a.m. The cool weather and rain dampened our plans for sketching but art was served by the experience. Have you recently really looked at the color and patterns of the animal world? Because it was cool and many were waiting for breakfast, the animals were up and walking around.
Lions demonstrated their agility and checked us out giving us opportunities to study their faces and form. The tigers accommodated us by pacing and showing us their unique and beautiful stripes and demonstrating their startling roar!
The pandas allowed us to marvel at their ability to sit and eat their bamboo with some very human-like hand control and study their black and white coloring pattern as they rested after breakfast.
The elephants were happy to let us hang around and watch- have you ever seen a 4800 lbs. scale that weighs a baby elephant or noticed that these giant creatures are graceful?
We all agreed to visit the zoo again - lots to see and be inspired by nature. Please join us next time. Sometimes it is just important to leave the serious cares of the adult world and allow yourself to have fun! Perhaps next time it won't be raining and we will actually do some sketching - but we will play it by ear!

Tour Art-o-matic!
by Sherill Anne Gross
June 2008
On a fairly warm Thursday evening a group of five WCA/DC members met to tour Art-o-matic. Our goal was to seek out the spaces WCA/DC members were located in the exhibit.
For a Thursday evening, it was not crowded and it made walking around easy. We all started on the 12th floor and worked our way down.
We located 16 member spaces. I had met many of these artists while volunteering and did not realize they were members. It was nice to put it all together. I will admit, it was hard to stay on track, there was a lot to see at art-o-matic and it was easy to get sidetracked. Overall it was a great show and WCA/DC was represented beautifully on all the floors!

Supporting WCA/DC: It's up to you!
by Jennifer Judelsohn
Fundraising is essential to the continued vitality of our chapter. The financial base of our chapter is a three-legged stool. Membership dues provide one leg of the stool; exhibit- related fees (such as application fees for juried shows or hanging fees) are another leg; and the third leg comes from fundraising. If our fundraising efforts are unsuccessful, one of these legs is missing, and the financial stability of the chapter is endangered.
WCA/DC's fundraising activities this year have focused on two areas: gathering information regarding the best way to go about our chapter fundraising, and defraying the cost of the chapter website redesign (including the development of the new chapter logo).
As part of the information-gathering effort, we sent out a survey to chapter members with a list of potential fundraising activities, asking them to indicate whether they would participate in any of the proposed events, whether they would invite a guest to participate, and whether they would be willing to help organize/plan such events. Although the number of responses has been relatively small so far, a consensus does seem to be emerging. The type of fundraising effort that is most likely to get the best response from members is the most direct: simply asking people to write a check to WCA/DC.
With that consensus in mind, we have chosen to take the direct approach for our current fundraising campaign, which is intended to defray the $3,500 cost of our chapter website redesign. This new website will enable our chapter to present a more professional "face" to members and potential members, galleries and exhibit venues, art collectors and supporters. It also will provide members who do not have their own website with the opportunity to create a professional looking Internet presence; members who do have their own websites will be able to link to the WCA/DC site, and the chapter site will link to individual members' websites. Our new website will support WCA/DC as well as all of our chapter members. The concrete benefits of the new website are well worth the relatively small initial investment in this redesign.
Although we were able to pay for the redesign out of our reserves, we now need to replenish our funds. A quick calculation shows that if 70 members donate an average of $50 each, we would have enough to cover the cost of the website design.
We already have received donations from several WCA/DC members, totaling more than $450 in this campaign. We are very grateful for support from the following members:
Holly Dodge
Nancy Elizabeth Fitch
Jennifer Judelsohn
Mara Odette
Pat Ortman
Margaret Paris
Carole Lyle Shaw
Judy Sinkin
Katie Weaver
We welcome additional donations towards this campaign by all members, in any amount (less or more).
Please make checks out to WCA/DC and send to:

Write "Website Redesign" on the memo line of your check.
Please note that these donations are NOT tax-deductible.
Our chapter relies on our ability to raise funds successfully and -- as the survey results indicate -- chapter members are the key. It's up to you!

Summer Board Meeting
by Marilyn Hayes
WCA's 2008 Summer National Board Meeting, Friday, July 25-27, 2008, was a great success thanks to the WCA members who contributed their time and energy to hosting WCA board meeting attendees from all over the country, organizing, contributing to and attending the potluck, transporting people to events and providing assistance during the board meeting. Fifteen National Board members were joined by several observers from WCA/DC and other chapters very much enjoyed the visit. The chapter's hospitality was very much appreciated by our out of town visitors. Thanks so much for your support.
The focus of this board meeting was creating the WCA's future over the next five years. Saturday morning was devoted to an exciting brainstorming session designed to create a context and a vision of WCA in 2013. The energy and enthusiasm of the morning contributed to the afternoon's work - generating solutions for current WCA issues. On Sunday, the National Board discussed an agenda addressing the budget, WCA's 2009 National Conference and Lifetime Achievement Awards in Los Angeles in 2009 and Chicago conference in 2010.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at the National Conference in Los Angeles, from February 28 to March 1, 2009. |
